Saint-Saëns got it right with his first cello concerto, widely believed to be one of the greatest ever written for the instrument, even by tough critics like Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff. The success of this piece catapulted the composer to stardom, and it’s only fitting that our audience should hear it performed by a major star: Joshua Roman.
Pair that with the dreamy playfulness of Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye or “Mother Goose Suite,” written in 1910 for six-year-old Mimi and seven-year-old Jean, the children of the composer’s close friends. The piece has been featured regularly in popular culture, on albums, in television series, and movies.
Paul Hindemith and his wife loved playing piano duets by Classical period composer Carl Maria von Weber, and it was these pieces that inspired his ambitious Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber. Beloved by orchestras for its sumptuous harmonies and technical challenges, you’ll be amazed when you hear and see the artistry our Greenville Symphony musicians bring to this metamorphosis.

Petrushka instantly drops us into another world; Stravinsky's orchestral classic is a wild torrent of vivid rhythms and charismatic vignettes, each more colorful than the last. Falla's delightful Three-Cornered Hat, on the other hand, introduces us to a hilarious love triangle. Celebrated cellist Joshua Roman plays a new concerto by Grammy Award-winning composer Mason Bates, who describes Roman as "beloved by just about everyone who meets him."

- Mikhail Glinka's spirited "Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla"
- Percy Grainger's evocative "Colonial Song"
- Mason Bates' contemporary "Cello Concerto," with Joshua Roman as the soloist, showcasing a blend of American vernacular music including blues, jazz, and techno
- Aaron Copland's "Variations on a Shaker Melody," a homage to simplicity and elegance
- Béla Bartók's "Concerto for Orchestra," a vibrant showcase of the orchestra's talents

Spotlight Concert II: SCHUBERT’S MIRACULOUS QUINTET

Usher in the 2023 Chinese New Year with masterpieces by Tan Dun for cello, guitar, and orchestra.
On January 14, Chicago Philharmonic rings in the Chinese Lunar New Year with a concert celebrating the work of Academy and Grammy Award winning Chinese-American composer Tan Dun at the Harris Theater. Multi-Grammy Award winner Sharon Isbin will perform the American Premiere of Dun’s Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra (Yi2), which draws inspiration from Spanish Flamenco and an ancient Chinese flute called the Pipa. Then, Dun’s Crouching Tiger Cello Suite weaves music from the soundtrack of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with solo cello performed by charismatic Joshua Roman, Chinese percussion, and orchestra. Plus, Donna Milanovich Composer in Residence Reinaldo Moya presents a World Premiere cello concertino.

Experience the heritage, sentiment and texture of Coleridge-Taylor’s spirited 18th century Haitian dance, The Bamboula, followed by Elgar’s heart-wrenching Cello Concerto, his response to the end of the First World War, featuring artist-in-residence Joshua Roman.  And to conclude Donato Cabrera conducts Sibelius’s bold and sweeping Symphony No. 2.
