BBC New Generation Artist and 2025 Terence Judd-Hallé Award winner, Julius Asal joins players from the orchestra for a programme built around Schumann’s Piano Quintet. The first ever piece for this combination of instruments, the outer movements are full of exuberance and extroversion, and frame a hauntingly beautiful funeral march.

This Scandinavian programme opens with Esa-Pekka Salonen’s enigmatic Helix, described by the composer as a spiralling ‘nine-minute accelerando’. While the pulse of the piece increases gradually throughout, the note values get proportionately longer, creating a fascinating experience, where the work seems to simultaneously speed up and slow down.

2025’s astounding winner of the Terence Judd-Hallé Award, Julius Asal, joins forces with returning Hallé conductor Lionel Bringuier to perform Grieg’s exceptional Piano Concerto.

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields in partnership with BBC Radio 3 present pianist Julius Asal as the inaugural ASMF BBC New Generation Associate. The programme will include Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 22 in Eb Major, K. 482, a piece that radiates innovation and creativity (his first piano concerto to use the clarinet), Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major and his Tombeau de Couperin scored for orchestra. A moving piece where each movement is dedicated to a friend of Ravel’s who had died in WW1, and one of his most ingenious pieces of orchestration.

When Sergey Rachmaninov composed his evocative Études-Tableaux (‘Study-Pictures’) for piano, he kept his inspirations to himself, hoping that audiences would imagine their own pictures instead. Almost twenty years later, when Italian composer Ottorino Respighi set out to orchestrate a selection, Rachmaninov divulged some of the images that had come to mind when writing the pieces: a fair, the sea, children’s tales, and marches.
