The final part of IN Series’ Monteverdi trilogy, Poppea brings the composer’s most famous and audacious final opera of love, power, sex, and betrayal to life inspired by the performance tradition of South India, and specifically Bharatanatyam dance. This landmark production, running March 14-30 at Dupont Underground, St. Mark’s Capitol Hill and Baltimore Theatre Project, is of one of opera’s undisputed masterpieces. IN Series’ production will be a collaboration with Indo-American choreographer Hari Krishnan, whose work brilliantly combines the aesthetics of this traditional dance form with contemporary movement and questions of gender norms, and will feature original dance music composed by sitar player Ami Dang, and mridangam percussionist Rajna Swaminathan. The work will be directed and conducted by IN Series Artistic Director Timothy Nelson and feature a cast of local favorites and international artists known for their interpretations of opera of the Baroque. The INnovātiō Orchestra, IN Series’ own period baroque band, will blend music of South India in an evening of whirling passion, music, poetry, and dance. Opening night will be a celebration of the Indian festival of Holi.

Featuring a quartet of dazzling soloists from Vancouver, the Vancouver Bach Choir’s 2024 performance of Handel’s Messiah will delight those for whom attending a performance of this oratorio is an annual tradition, as well as those for whom it is a first foray into this celebrated baroque choral gem!

Così fan tutte, roughly translated as “they are all like that,” tells the story of sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella facing the conundrum of remaining faithful to their lovers Guglielmo and Ferrando. Our production updates the setting from the 1790s to a Rocky Mountain resort in the 1930s. The sisters arrive for their vacation. They cast eyes upon, and promptly fall for, two dashing young mounties. Exasperated and charmed by the couples mooning around the hotel, resort staffer Despina teams up with long-term resident Don Alfonso to play a double trick on them, testing both the depth of their affections and their assumptions about their own motivations. The story walks the tightrope between Opera Seria (serious plots) and Opera Buffa (comedic plots) and Mozart takes full advantage of these moods weaving his music between the two contrasts throughout.  Flighty and fickle? Faithful and true? One could argue that couples must discover their balance to know their future.  While a happy ending is never guaranteed, these lovers throw themselves into the discovery with flirtation and fun, while also questioning what motivates their true desires.

Under the direction of new Aartistic Ddirector Kathleen Allan, this interpretation draws on historically-informed performance practice. Vibrant pacing reveals the drama, intimacy, and exultation of this seasonal favourite.

It’s the eve of Figaro and Susanna’s wedding, but nothing is going right. The Count’s wandering eye has landed on the bride-to-be. Cherubino, the page, is sweet on the Countess, and Marcellina, the governess, is chasing after Figaro.

Mozart’s great ensemble comedy features a colourful cast of characters and a whirlwind of tricks, disguises, and mistaken identities. Can the servants turn the tables on the masters in order to teach the Count a lesson and save the wedding? Will love triumph?

From the famous overture to the finale, this social commentary on class and love unfolds with brilliant music, memorable melodies, and heart-breaking tenderness as the characters ponder young love, lost love, and forgiveness.
