The Wiener Symphoniker have premiered various works by Arnold Schoenberg, including his symphonic poem "Pelleas and Melisande". A narrative love story after Maurice Maeterlinck in dramatic sounds, which Schönberg composed without knowledge of Debussy's opera and after his "Transfigured Night". In the Wiener Symphoniker's 125th anniversary season, it will now be conducted by Israeli conductor Lahav Shani. Also on the programme is Ludwig van Beethoven's 2nd Piano Concerto (op. 19), which is still oriented towards Viennese Classicism, but foreshadows the later Beethoven. The soloist is Argentinian pianist legend Martha Argerich.

The great Martha Argerich returns to the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra as a concerto soloist, in Beethoven's Second Piano Concerto, surrounded surrounded in this programme by orchestral music of brilliance and drama. Samuel ColeridgeTaylor’s Ballade promises a wild ride: its energy and urgency will make any audience sit up and listen. To close, Marios Papadopoulos conducts Tchaikovsky’s great symphonic tussle with fate. In his red-blooded Symphony No. 4, the composer who always wore his heart on his sleeve manages to mine the consolation of hope from the turmoil of tragedy and despair, creating a live music experience like no other.

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe returns to its Austrian home in Eisenstadt to perform two concerts at this year’s Herbstgold Festival. Resident orchestra at the Schloss Esterhazy since 2022, the COE regularly appears in the Palace’s programme of events every year and we are thrilled that the Esterhazy Foundation has extended our residency until 2027. This year’s Festival is about ‘yearning’. Julia Rachlin, Artistic Director of Herbstgold, said: “To understand human beings, one must know what they yearn for. It would be too trivial, however, to associate the idea of yearning only with romantic feelings. It is worth taking pause again and again to become aware of one’s own longings. Especially in difficult and uncertain times, the yearning for a better world unites us. Music is the direct manifestation of the yearning felt by humans. So, what could be more natural than to immerse oneself in the world of music, which only comes into being through the emotions and the yearning vibrations of the soul? She was born in 1941, he in 1989: two generations stand between the legendary pianist Martha Argerich and the young Israeli maestro Lahav Shani — yet when they meet, sparks fly. When they first appeared together in Tel Aviv in 2019, with Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto, the applause seemed endless. Since then, they have made music together regularly: she at the keyboard and he on the podium. Or even in recitals for two pianos, or for four hands in encores — for Shani is himself a pianist of distinction.

To twenty-first-century ears, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 can feel like the most modern and daring of them all. Anticipating musical developments a hundred years away, it was the first symphonic work to build a journey primarily from rhythmic rather than melodic blocks. No work of the period can match the wild dances, insistent rhythmic propulsion and infectious joy of Beethoven’s Seventh – but one piece from the following century that certainly can, is Ravel’s jazz-infused piano concerto of 120 years later. The legendary Martha Argerich is the soloist in Ravel’s electrifyingly slick and slinky piano concerto after Annie Dutoit-Argerich narrates the greatest musical menagerie of them all, Saint-Saëns’s beastly and enchanting Carnival of the Animals.

Martha Argerich’s appearances with the Berliner Philharmoniker are always special events. This time, we hear her in Sergei Prokofiev’s effervescent, high-voltage Third Piano Concerto. The concert opens with Claude Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, whose shimmering sounds transport us into an impressionistic dream world. Chicks in their shells, the hut of the witch Baba Yaga, or the Great Gate of Kyiv – these and other vivid images are brought to life in Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Maurice Ravel’s orchestration made the cycle one of the most popular works in the orchestral repertoire. Lahav Shani conducts.
