Cellist

Yi-Wen Jiang’s string quartet arrangements of popular Chinese folk melodies are at the heart of our celebration of the Year of the Horse—a symbol of independence, growth, and free spiritedness in Chinese culture. A dynamic scene of whinnying, galloping equines comes to life as the cello and piano take on an arrangement of Haihuai Huang’s Racing Horses—another folk song originally written for the erhu, a traditional two-stringed instrument from China.

Young artists from Caramoor’s Evnin Rising Stars mentoring program perform in a pair of afternoon concerts for which the program’s Artistic Director, cellist Marcy Rosen, is joined by distinguished artists Soovin Kim, violin, and Daniel Phillips, viola. These concerts are the capstone of a weeklong residency at Caramoor in which these young musicians participate in workshops, reading sessions, and ensemble rehearsals, culminating in live performances with their mentors. Since 1992, this program has identified some of the finest musicians of the next generation and helped them cross the threshold from their student years into the early stages of a professional career.

Bach, the Gamut Bach Ensemble prides itself on stylistically sensitive, earnest, and insightful performances. Returning for its 10th PCMS appearance, the Ensemble, directed by Koji Otsuki, embarks on its annual program of cantatas in the luminous Church of the Holy Trinity.

Directed by Koji Otsuki, the Ensemble embarks on a program of cantatas in the luminous Church of the Holy Trinity.

Flutist and composer André Jolivet was the kind of musician who strictly avoided conformity and advocated for music that makes us feel “human.” Pairing the flute with a quartet of percussionists, he aimed to highlight the instruments closest to the “primal” senses and origin of music in his 1965 suite.
