Hailed by Gramophone as “the Heifetz of the flute,” flutist Marina Piccinini returns to the PCMS stage with “supremely musical” violinist Hye-Jin Kim (The Strad), “warmly communicative” cellist Peter Stumpf (Seen and Heard International), and pianist and Society favorite Cynthia Raim. This program features exciting and technically demanding repertoire for the flute and concludes with Mozart’s Piano Trio in G Major, the first of his later trios to be written for fortepiano, rather than harpsichord.

Cellist Peter Stumpf, of the Johannes Quartet and former principal of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, takes us on a uniquely expressive musical journey with another longtime Society favorite, pianist Cynthia Raim. Their all-French program ranges from the raw emotion of Debussy’s Cello Sonata to a pair of charming works by Fauré before concluding with Poulenc’s Cello Sonata, a lush, Romantic work described as “Mozart meets Stravinsky—in a Paris cabaret.”

PCMS celebrates Maurice Ravel’s 150th birthday with two programs (the second on May 6) dedicated to this extraordinary French composer, pianist, and conductor. The first event features “supremely musical” (The Strad) violinist Hye-Jin Kim and fellow Society favorites cellist Peter Stumpf and pianist Cynthia Raim in a program culminating with the composer’s Piano Trio in A Minor. This trio is acclaimed for its fresh and compelling musical voice, and for uniting an immediate sensual appeal with a brilliantly-crafted architecture.

PCMS’s second event honoring Ravel’s 150th birthday features pianists Lydia Artymiw and Cynthia Raim, both of whom have been Philadelphia favorites for decades, with more than 70 PCMS performances between them. For this special duo recital, Artymiw and Raim present solo and four-hands works by Ravel, whose revelatory style of French music draws from such diverse inspirations as Asian culture, French Symbolist poetry, Spanish folk music, and Impressionist painting.
