Dive into the expansive repertoire of wind octets with the musicians of the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (OPRL) as they welcome the distinguished oboist Philippe Tondre. A Paris-trained virtuoso, Tondre is a professor at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and serves as the principal oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, with previous positions in Stuttgart, Leipzig, and Japan. This special program juxtaposes the timeless works of Mozart and Beethoven with pieces by one of England's most revered masters, Gordon Jacob, who taught composition at the Royal College of Music in London from 1924 to 1966.

The shine of the winds

Philharmonic Hall of Liege

Principal Oboe Philippe Tondre is featured in Strauss’s melodic Oboe Concerto, a stunning example of the oboe’s power as a solo instrument. Inspired by a walking tour through the Scottish Highlands, Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony (“Scottish”) evokes the composer’s reflections on the sweeping landscapes of the British Isles. Also on the program: Anton Webern’s mystical depiction of nature, Im Sommerwind, inspired by Bruno Wille’s poem and given its world premiere by The Philadelphia Orchestra and Eugene Ormandy in 1962, nearly 60 years after its composition.

Lauded for the elegance and power of his playing, Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Oboe Philippe Tondre debuts on our series in the company of two Philadelphia favorites: Roberto Díaz—the President and CEO of the Curtis Institute of Music and former principal violist of the Philadelphia Orchestra—and pianist Amy Yang, a “jaw-dropping pianist who [steals] the show… with effortless finesse” (Washington Post).
