Many of music’s highest honors have come his way—the Pulitzer Prize for music and a commission from the Metropolitan Opera among them. The BPYO plays his incandescent Remembering Gatsby (Foxtrot for Orchestra) for the first time since the senior Boston Philharmonic Orchestra played it in 1995.

A note from the Maestro: In paying tribute to the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, our programming was chosen to represent a wide berth of compositional contributions from various corners of the U.S. Pairing Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman with Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man gives us a unique opportunity of reflection across the decades. Valerie Colman’s Umoja (Anthem of Unity) is now a staple in concert halls across the nation, and the New England Triptych by William Schuman takes us on a musical journey to a New England of the not-so-distant past. Our season finale concert culminates in a suite of much-beloved music from George Gershwin’s opera, “Porgy and Bess.”

ONNY gets an early start on celebrating our nation’s 250th birthday with this stirring program of music by American composers. There’s a reason John Williams has been called a modern-day John Philip Sousa, as there is no one better at stirring feelings of patriotism through his music. And when it comes to celebrating American heroes through music, Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait continues to be the gold standard. The work combines Copland’s rousing music with Lincoln’s powerful words. The program concludes with Howard Hanson stunningly beautiful Symphony No.2, better known by its subtitle, “Romantic.” It promises to be a thoughtful and inspirational tribute to our nation’s semi quincentennial.

That’s the highlight of a concert that features two of Sir John’s favourite American classics – pure uplift – and another, very special treat, as he conducts RPO principal oboe John Roberts in a delightful solo showpiece. Continuing the celebration of America’s 250th birthday, the third subscription concert at the Holdcraft Performing Arts Center in Michigan City on March 8, 2026 will reflect on the themes of America’s struggles and triumphs as a young nation. The New World opens with Charles Ives’ Variations on America, followed by two pieces inspired by Abraham Lincoln, Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, and Stella Sung’s Lincoln’s Battle. Closing the concert will be Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, or New World Symphony, which Dvorak wrote during his brief, but significant time spent in New York City and inspired by African American spirituals and Native American traditions.

Mozart’s Horn Concerto reflects the ideals Boulanger championed, searching in tradition the possible paths for novel expressions.

Tonight’s concert celebrates the clarinet, and the outstanding playing of Mark van de Wiel.  

Mark first performed in the Royal Festival Hall as a member of the National Youth Orchestra, and was the Philharmonia’s Principal Clarinet from 2000 to 2025. He plays a brand new concerto commissioned from his friend Jonathan Dove CBE. Dove’s music often expresses feelings of wonder at the natural world.  His third concerto to feature a soloist scanning the skies (following Stargazer and Northern Lights), Rainbow showcases Mark’s virtuosity and lyricism. 

The celebration continues with Aaron Copland’s glorious Clarinet Concerto, commissioned by jazz legend Benny Goodman. Then Mark hands over to the Philharmonia’s new Principal Clarinet Maura Marinucci for the unmistakable glissando opening of Rhapsody in Blue. The OPRL and Lucie Leguay embark on a journey to the heart of 20th- century America , with the nine Symphonic Dances from Bernstein's masterpiece West Side Story , reorganized into an orchestral suite by the composer in 1960. Commissioned by Nadia Boulanger, Copland's Organ Symphony (1924), a student of the great French pedagogue, blends modernism, jazz influences, and virtuosity, capturing the bold energy of the United States in the 1920s. Florence Price's work is experiencing a remarkable resurgence. Conceived on a Negro spiritual theme , her vibrant Concert Overture No. 1 , premiered in Chicago in 1939, embodies all the richness of her African-American roots.

The always-evolving Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble features musicians from the legendary Met Orchestra in a variety of unique programs. Together, along with special guest artists from the Metropolitan Opera and beyond, they explore a boundless world of chamber music, adapting to fit the instrumental needs of any piece—from all-time classics to hard-to-find hidden gems and standout works by many of today’s significant composers. In this Sunday matinee, they perform works by American composers Caroline Shaw, Copland, Beach, G. Walker, Barber, and John Adams, joined by Yannick Nézet-Séguin as pianist and conductor.
