Take a walk with the BSO! For this concert, we will show our appreciation and thanks for nature’s bounty by playing two well-known and beloved works that celebrate the outdoors. First, we’ll envision the rolling hills and fields of the harvest with music from the ballet repertoire through American composer Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. After intermission, settle in for another view of the beauty of nature in all its peace and ferocity as the BSO performs the legendary “Pastoral” Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven. In his Sixth Symphony in F Major, Beethoven explores good feelings, calm, and the outright fear of a mighty storm in the five movements that make up this expression of love for the outdoors that sustained his soul during some of his darkest personal moments.

**About Adam Golka:**
Polish-American pianist Adam Golka has been a prominent figure on the concert stage since winning first prize at the 2nd China Shanghai International Piano Competition at the age of sixteen. He has performed with numerous prestigious orchestras and has received accolades such as the Gilmore Young Artist Award and the Max I. Allen Classical Fellowship Award. Golka is known for his passionate chamber music performances and has recorded works by Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms. He has also premiered compositions by contemporary composers and continues to develop his artistry under the mentorship of renowned musicians.

SDSO's principal cellist Robert Erhardt captures the intensity of Dvorak's Cello Concerto-written while Dvorak was in America.  Composer Paul Moravec will be on hand for the world premiere of the orchestral version of his ode to immigrants "A New Country."

Composer and conductor John Adams leads a program that honors modern American land- and cityscapes, from his own jazz-inflected take on film noir’s gritty sound world, through Gabriella Smith’s tribute to the Northern California coastline, to Copland’s evocative depiction of a deserted cityscape at night.

Danny Elfman is a legend of movie music, the man whose scores for Batman and Edward Scissorhands fused rock ‘n’ roll with orchestral technicolour to dazzling effect. And conductor JoAnn Falletta – an American in Liverpool – delivers a side-order of high-kicking tunes and fascinating rhythms, courtesy of Aaron Copland and George Gershwin.

The Q & A session following the concert gives students and teachers the opportunity to ask questions of any musician or the conductor.  The program is also available via live-stream.   Children have access to a comprehensive program as the KSO alternates “Getting to Know You” (An introduction to instruments of the orchestra) with “Back in My Day” (the history of the orchestra and its music).

Shostakovich’s first cello concerto is a stunning showcase of his unique blend of classical tradition and modernist innovation. The four movements each have their own distinct character and mood, ranging from sombre and introspective to frenzied and virtuosic. The concerto’s emotional impact is undeniable, with its haunting melodies, complex harmonies, and thrilling climax. After his stunning Halifax performance in 2016, cellist Santiago Cañón Valencia – “an artist from whom sound and texture flow with ease and authenticity” (The Whole Note) and a BBC New Generation Artist in 2022 – returns to perform this daring concerto. Plus, hear Copland’s rich, radiant Appalachian Spring, “one of the most inspiring and symbolic works of the century” (NPR).

16-time Grammy Award-winner Béla Fleck joins the CSO for a celebration of the American sound. Fleck’s reimagining of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue pays homage to the legendary composer while redefining an all-time classic. Contemporaries Florence Price and Aaron Copland did the same in their time, shaping, contextualizing and creating indelible music that feels like it was always here. Copland’s ballet music to Rodeo, featuring the rip-roaring and instantly recognizable "Hoe-Down," became a new soundtrack to the American West. Florence Price, merging traditional African American themes with the latest music of her day, established a singular voice all her own.

Family Concert: Marvellous Musical Myths and Legends

“Hi-yo, Silver! Away!” Rossini’s William Tell Overture is best known for being featured as the theme song for the radio and television series The Lone Ranger.

In 2024 Meyer received his sixth and seventh Grammy Awards for a collaborative recording “As We Speak” with Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain, and Rakesh Chaurasia. The recording won Best Contemporary Album and Best Global Music Performance.

Tippet Rise is delighted to welcome Canadian-Macedonian mezzo-soprano Ema Nikolovska and Indian-American pianist Kunal Lahiry to the art center for their debut. Both BBC New Generation Artists, they will perform a program titled Devotions, inspired by love and nature, with songs by Priaulx Rainier, Aaron Copland, Schubert, Prokofiev, Emily Doolittle, Oliver Messian, and George Crumb, in addition to the US premiere of Korean-American composer, pianist, and YouTuber Nahre Sol’s Apperceptive Algorithms.

It's a quintessential American ballet—Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring conjures the majesty of rugged landscapes, and a spirit of hope and possibility. Carlos Kalmar leads the Grant Park Orchestra in the suite from Appalachian Spring alongside Mozart's soaring Jupiter Symphony, a piece imbued with such splendrous grandeur, someone named it after the king of the gods.

Aaron Copland made four highly publicized government-sponsored trips to Latin America between 1941 and 1963. During these visits, he shared contemporary American concert music with Latin American audiences, including his own violin sonata, heard on tonight’s program. Back home, he drew US attention to the composers and musicians he met in Latin America, such as Heitor Villa-Lobos of Brazil and Silvestre Revueltas and Manuel Ponce of Mexico, all whom Copland knew personally and whose works are also featured. Another contemporary of Copland was the Black American composer William Grant Still, whose Panamanian Dances were inspired by a collection of Latin American folk songs. The history of Pan-American musical exchange predates Copland.

The Financial Times hailed him as “a pianist with a captivating personality,” Le Monde applauded his “magician’s fingers and soul of integrity.” Bruce Liu is the first Canadian to ever win a gold medal at the prestigious XVIII International Chopin Competition, and at 26 has already achieved rock star status in the classical music world. Hear him in Prokofiev’s high-voltage, virtuosic 3rd Piano Concerto, which the Chicago Daily Herald called “the most beautiful modern concerto for piano” at its American premiere in 1921. The last movement is especially dazzling, with pounding chords on the piano surrounded by blazing sounds from the orchestra.
