The program beings with Mendelssohn’s haunting  Hebrides Overture, followed by Concertmaster Leonid Sigal for a performance of Vieuxtemps’s 5th Violin Concerto—a rarely performed masterpiece by a 19th Century Belgian virtuoso. We close our performance with Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony—an impassioned work that moves from angst to blazing triumph.

Continuing the celebration of America’s 250th birthday, the third subscription concert at the Holdcraft Performing Arts Center in Michigan City on March 8, 2026 will reflect on the themes of America’s struggles and triumphs as a young nation. The New World opens with Charles Ives’ Variations on America, followed by two pieces inspired by Abraham Lincoln, Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, and Stella Sung’s Lincoln’s Battle. Closing the concert will be Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, or New World Symphony, which Dvorak wrote during his brief, but significant time spent in New York City and inspired by African American spirituals and Native American traditions.

From Thea Musgrave’s dynamic Points of View to Aaron Copland’s lyrical Appalachian Spring, we hear the imprint of her guidance—clarity, structure, and emotional truth. Mozart’s Horn Concerto reflects the ideals Boulanger championed, searching in tradition the possible paths for novel expressions.

This concert celebrates the rich and varied voices that define American music. The first half features iconic works by Charles Ives, William Grant Still, and Aaron Copland—each capturing a distinct facet of American life, history, and ideals. The second half shifts to contemporary perspectives with Shuying Li’s meditative In This Breath and Clarice Assad’s dynamic Sin Fronteras, affirming the power of music to transcend boundaries, embrace diverse identities, and reflect the human experience in all its beautiful complexity.

The OPRL and Lucie Leguay embark on a journey to the heart of 20th- century America , with the nine Symphonic Dances from Bernstein's masterpiece West Side Story , reorganized into an orchestral suite by the composer in 1960. Commissioned by Nadia Boulanger, Copland's Organ Symphony (1924), a student of the great French pedagogue, blends modernism, jazz influences, and virtuosity, capturing the bold energy of the United States in the 1920s. Florence Price's work is experiencing a remarkable resurgence. Conceived on a Negro spiritual theme , her vibrant Concert Overture No. 1 , premiered in Chicago in 1939, embodies all the richness of her African-American roots.

Tonight’s concert celebrates the clarinet, and the outstanding playing of Mark van de Wiel.  

Mark first performed in the Royal Festival Hall as a member of the National Youth Orchestra, and was the Philharmonia’s Principal Clarinet from 2000 to 2025. He plays a brand new concerto commissioned from his friend Jonathan Dove CBE. Dove’s music often expresses feelings of wonder at the natural world.  His third concerto to feature a soloist scanning the skies (following Stargazer and Northern Lights), Rainbow showcases Mark’s virtuosity and lyricism. 

The celebration continues with Aaron Copland’s glorious Clarinet Concerto, commissioned by jazz legend Benny Goodman. Then Mark hands over to the Philharmonia’s new Principal Clarinet Maura Marinucci for the unmistakable glissando opening of Rhapsody in Blue. On piano, Frank Dupree brings his infectious energy and enthusiasm to Gershwin’s masterpiece.

Class Classics begins with the musical enthusiasm of young people who qualify with their school orchestras and learn from the professionals of the Munich Radio Orchestra during rehearsals what matters for a big performance. From the very first second ofBruckner's 4th Symphonyhe conjures us out of our earthly shell and into a world of mystery, of euphony, of overwhelming currents and enormous constructions. Bruckner's music is 'larger than life', but his 4th symphony is the most welcoming of all his great symphonies and a good place to start if you still have your first Bruckner experience to enjoy. He takes us from outer space to the very deepest place in the heart of the ball when he builds his enormous musical sequences, which switch surprisingly effortlessly from great drama to subtle intimacy. Organ virtuoso that he was, he uses the orchestra as a gigantic luxury organ, which in a split second can switch from the finest little Austrian folk melody to terrifying cascades of sound - produced with an orchestra that is not much larger than in Beethoven's time, but which uses the entire register in new and surprising ways.
