American Horizons is a salute to American composers, including regional composers Jeremy Beck, James Romig, Randal Faust, and the incomparable Aaron Copland.

April’s concert is filled with inspiring and youthful energy featuring Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals! This piece depicts various animals in their natural habitats through the different colors and timbres of the orchestra. Following that, we’ll dive deeper into the sounds of the orchestra with a piece by Modesto’s own and two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist composer Andrew Norman. The program will end with Copland’s Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo with the young musicians of the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra playing side-by-side on Hoedown.

Though the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant has been awarded to rising star musicians since 1976, its first solo percussionist was only recognized in 2022: marimba extraordinaire Ji Su Jung. Jung appears for the first time in Allen-Bradley Hall to perform a concerto by Kevin Puts, with an exuberant approach  hailed as “dazzling — filled with breathtaking virtuosity but also beautifully shaped with extraordinary color and nuance” (JoAnn Falleta). MSO Assistant Conductor Ryan Tani returns to the podium to guide this lively program, which begins with Copland’s sentimental paean to the American heartland, Appalachian Spring, and ends with Beethoven’s buoyant and brilliant Fourth Symphony.

Question? Answer! They are finally coming together to make music together: our chief conductor Jonathan Darlington and his older brother, the celebrated concert organist and highly respected church musician from Oxford, Stephen Darlington. He has brought a work to Nuremberg that allows him to pull out all the stops of the Meistersingerhalle organ and his own art of organ playing. It is the breathtaking, overwhelming, but rarely heard in this country, organ symphony by the US national classic Aaron Copland, composed in the "Roaring Twenties". The organ symphony is contrasted with a "secret" symphony. Tchaikovsky's 3rd Suite is in fact a veritable symphony in terms of dimension and design, including waltzes and a sequence of variations. In between: the enigmatic orchestral piece "The Unanswered Question" by the pioneer of real American art music, Charles Ives. His question: where does music come from, where does music go? Our answer: Definitely from Tchaikovsky to Copland!

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields continues to push the boundaries of player-directed performance to new heights with fresh, brilliant interpretations of the world’s greatest orchestral music.
Appearing without famed music director Joshua Bell (who appears elsewhere this season in recital), they’ll be joined by first prize winner of the 18th Chopin Piano Competition 2021 in Warsaw, Bruce Liu, who has secured his reputation as one of the most exciting talents of his generation with a “rock-star status in the classical music world” (The Globe and Mail).

The unique spirit of our nation has been the source of inspiration for countless writers and composers through the years. ETSO brings two of those voices to the stage for a concert celebrating America in music. The words of American icons, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, take center stage for two works: The speeches and writings of our 16th president give voice to Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait. And Composer Aaron Dworkin has used the life and words of America’s first president, George Washington, as the source of his work The American Rhapsody.  Dworkin, himself, will serve as narrator for the ETSO performance.  The concert also features special appearances by vocal and instrumental ensembles from Texas College and Jarvis Christian University, performing with the ETSO.

Music Director Ken-David Masur conducts a powerful program highlighting three generations of American composers. In Aaron Copland’s stirring musical portrait of Abraham Lincoln, the composer begins by suggesting “the mysterious sense of fatality that surrounds Lincoln’s personality” and ends by attempting “to draw a simple but impressive frame about the words of Lincoln himself.” MSO Principal Clarinet Todd Levy performs Richard Danielpour’s From the Mountaintop, dedicated to the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The evening concludes with Charles Ives’s Second Symphony, which samples classic American folk tunes such as “America the Beautiful,” “Turkey in the Straw,” and “Camptown Races” — the last of which Lincoln himself used as a campaign song, bringing the concert full circle.

Nature, its beauty, its endangerment: These are the themes of our Biennale and of this concert, which takes us around the world. It begins with a new work by Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen, whose work is strongly inspired by her native Lapland. Brett Dean’s Fire Music in turn refers to a devastating bushfire in Australia in 2009. Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring takes us on to North America, while Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Chôros No. 10 echoes the birdsong of the Amazon. Marin Alsop makes her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

We’re proud to present an evening of evocative impressions of Latin America with works from three composers you’ll recognize and one we’re proud to introduce this season. Venezuelan / American composer and cellist Paul Desenne, who passed away in 2023 at age 63, was a founding member of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra and resident composer for El Sistema. His 2013 Concerto for 2 Flutes will feature Robert Langevin, Principal Flute of the New York Philharmonic, and Marco Granados, one of the world’s leading flutists in Latin American music. The program opens with a lyrical, edgy work by Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla, followed by Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Bach-inspired representations of Brazilian life. We’ll finish the evening with American icon Aaron Copland, who infused Mexican folk music into his rousing work.

When Riccardo Minasi conducts Mozart, the symphonist becomes a real dramatist and the concert podium becomes an unleashed opera stage. But that's not all: two Americans also ensure that the classical balance is shaken up in a powerful and rousing way. It cannot be overlooked: Aaron Copland wrote his clarinet concerto for the jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman; it swings and breathes, it pulsates and dances - especially when an expressive musician like Martin Fröst interprets it. But the grandmaster of American symphonic music is William Grant Still: he was the first African American whose works were performed by a leading orchestra such as the New York Philharmonic: in 1935, the time had come with the "Afro-American Symphony", in which spirituals and blues found their orchestral format. Conductor Minasi contrasts the primal musical forces of 20th century America with those of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. And these will be no less pulsating and furious under his baton, as the Italian with roots in historical performance practice is considered the man of the hour when it comes to radical Mozart revitalization.

The Portuguese clarinetist Sérgio Fernandes Pires, born in 1995, is one of the most promising and artistically active clarinetists of his generation. As a soloist, he has performed with well-known orchestras such as the Musikkollegium Winterthur, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, Argovia Philharmonic, the Orchestra Filarmonicii de Stat Transilvania, the Bremen Philharmonic and the Silesian Chamber Orchestra. Since 2019, Sérgio Pires has been teaching at the Minho University in Braga (Portugal), since 2023 at the Basel University of Music (Switzerland), and since 2024 he has been principal clarinetist of the London Symphonic Orchestra (Great Britain).

Awarded the silver medal in the 2019 Sendai International Music Competition, Baron Fenwick is a leading pianist of his generation. At 25 years old, he has performed with orchestras worldwide, including the Flint Symphony, the South Shore Symphony, and the Sendai Philharmonic. Fenwick has also performed at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall and holds degrees from Mannes College of Music.

Take a walk with the BSO! For this concert, we will show our appreciation and thanks for nature’s bounty by playing two well-known and beloved works that celebrate the outdoors. First, we’ll envision the rolling hills and fields of the harvest with music from the ballet repertoire through American composer Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. After intermission, settle in for another view of the beauty of nature in all its peace and ferocity as the BSO performs the legendary “Pastoral” Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven. In his Sixth Symphony in F Major, Beethoven explores good feelings, calm, and the outright fear of a mighty storm in the five movements that make up this expression of love for the outdoors that sustained his soul during some of his darkest personal moments.

He has performed with numerous prestigious orchestras and has received accolades such as the Gilmore Young Artist Award and the Max I. Allen Classical Fellowship Award. Golka is known for his passionate chamber music performances and has recorded works by Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms. He has also premiered compositions by contemporary composers and continues to develop his artistry under the mentorship of renowned musicians.

A Memo from the Maestro: Come join us as we celebrate the centenary of the first performance of a true American classic, a piano concerto that changed the world:  George Gershwin's amazing RHAPSODY IN BLUE!  Michelle Cann will bring her brilliance and charm on a welcome return visit to La Crosse, in which she'll also perform the La Crosse premiere of the Piano Concerto of the unjustly-neglected composer Florence Price, a central figure in the Black Chicago Renaissance of the 1930s and 40s.  Composed within a decade of each other, these two one-movement masterpieces make a perfect American pair.  And to end the evening -- and back by popular demand -- our Maestro presents yet another beautiful Aaron Copland Symphony No. 3.  culminating in Copland's magnificent full-orchestra rendering of his immortal "Fanfare for the Common Man" -- an evening not to be missed!
