In this concert, which concludes Kent Nagano's ten-year term as General Music Director, two key strands of his concert dramaturgy for Hamburg come together: the reference to tradition, namely to the Hanseatic Johannes Brahms, whose four symphonies the Philharmonic has accompanied in recent years in its Hamburg concerts as well as on tours - and the sound of our present in innovative premieres. A look back makes us think of Widmann's ARCHE, Dusapin's "Waves", Shepherd's "On a Clear Day" and many other outstanding new creations. In this concert - as both a crowning finale and farewell - a new symphony by the young Argentinian Alex Nante will be heard in his unmistakably dreamlike, spiritual sound language.

What began in 2023 with a concert performance of »Das Rheingold« and continued in 2024 with »Die Walküre« and now with »Siegfried« is no less than a redefinition of standards in Wagner interpretation. The project »The Wagner Cycles« is dedicated to a unique collaboration between academic expertise and practice, tackling Richard Wagner’s monumental opera tetralogy. In Dresden and on tour through Europe’s musical centers, the results of this spectacular sound workshop and the historically informed perspective on Wagner’s epoch-making theatrical oeuvre have been celebrated as revolutionary. In the third part of the »Ring«, »Siegfried», depictions of nature and the visceral portrayals of action reveal Wagner at the height of his expressive musical powers. As in previous years, the newly-won transparent orchestra sound and the focus on the singers’ treatment of language will ensure novel listening experiences.

Haydn's composition is characterised by a dramatic, extremely moving emotionality that is hard to resist. It was initially conceived as a purely instrumental composition - meditation music in seven slow movements with a prelude and final movement („Il Terremoto“ - the earthquake) for a Passion service. However, when Haydn heard an arrangement of his work with a German text in Passau in 1794, he was inspired to write his own vocal version. The premiere took place in Vienna in 1796. With the flourishing of choral societies in the 19th century, this vocal version of the Seven Words became one of the most frequently performed pieces of Passion music ever.

The Budapest Festival Orchestra takes a musical trip to the banks and into the depths of the Rhine when offering Schumann’s symphony, inspired by charming experiences and a Wagner scene. The former commemorates a peaceful riverside excursion to the Rhine, and the latter is one of the most famous scenes from the monumental opera tetralogy, The Ring of the Nibelung. The concert will feature two outstanding singers in the roles of Brünhilde and Wotan in one of the most dramatic father-daughter scenes in operatic literature. Swedish soprano Ingela Brimberg, who is very much at home in the Wagnerian repertoire, has sung the title role in numerous productions from Stockholm to Madrid to Bordeaux.

„Alle Menschen werden Brüder“: if Friedrich Schiller’s idealistic — and today particularly urgent — motto has been ingrained in our collective memory, then it is largely thanks to the Ninth Symphony. Based on a simple, recognizable melody, Ludwig van Beethoven builds up a masterful series of variations in his final movement that conveys Schiller’s hopeful Ode to Joy.

It is a work that pushes and indeed breaks down boundaries in every sense of the word, as it incorporates into a purely instrumental genre the human voice, which sings in the finale of how “all men become brothers.” Along with Beethoven’s universal musical and philosophical ideas, audiences can enjoy the return of the BFO’s much-loved guest artists, a Swedish soprano, a Dutch alto, an English tenor, and a German bass-baritone, who will ensure that this concert, where, together with the Pan-European Choir, they will sing Schiller’s immortal lines (now the text of the European Union anthem), will traverse national boundaries.
