Dive into the rich cultural tapestry of Vienna with "Close Encounters With Music: Café Vienna Nervous Splendor" at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center. This unique musical event celebrates Vienna's historical significance as a pivotal European cultural hub from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The program explores a variety of Viennese musical styles, from operetta to waltz, and features compositions by some of the most influential figures in music, literature, and intellectual thought who frequented Vienna's famed coffee houses.

**Featured Composers:** The event showcases the works of Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Brahms, Johan Strauss Jr., Mahler, Korngold, and includes the quintessential café music of Fritz Kreisler with his Caprice Viennois. The program also highlights Beethoven’s Piano Trio, which is based on a popular song by Weigl, and Schubert’s An die Musik, a sublime testament to his beloved métier.

Our Classic season culminates in one of the greatest of symphonic musical journeys from grief, following the death of a friend, to resolution, peace, and the beauty of afterlife and resurrection. The inclusion of vocal soloists and chorus draws comparisons with Beethoven’s own majestic choral symphony.

In this third concert in a series exploring complex social issues, frequent guest Giancarlo Guerrero leads American composer Julia Wolfe’s BSO co-commissioned Her Story, featuring the Lorelei Ensemble women’s vocal group. Originally commissioned to commemorate the centenary of women’s right to vote in the U.S., the piece broadly speaks of the continuing struggle for women’s rights. The three movements of Polish composer Henryk Górecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs movingly contemplates the anguish of the separation of a mother from her child.

Bach’s magnificent Mass features a large and colorful orchestra, including several unusual instruments. Praised for her “revelatory performance” (Opera News) of Bach’s sacred works, conductor Jeannette Sorrell leads the festive forces – including trumpets, timpani, strings, choir, and soloists.
