With our "Artist in Residence," Alexander Krichel, we perform one of the greatest piano works of all time: Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major. The way Beethoven allows soloist and orchestra to interact, the way he lets one lead at times, the other at times, the way the piano and orchestra meld together, and the way he creates dream worlds with distant keys, is the work of a genius. No wonder Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 was a revelation for Robert Schumann, Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninoff.

This evening, we will perform one of the most beautiful and moving piano concertos and one of the most impressive soundscapes – under the direction of our new Chief Conductor Felix Mildenberger, who will officially assume his post as General Music Director on August 1, 2026. Our "Artist in Residence," Alexander Krichel, expressly requested that he conduct this concert.

6th Philharmonic Concert

Alexander Krichel has recorded seven solo albums – featuring works by his favorite composers, Modest Mussorgsky, George Enescu, Beethoven, Mozart, Ravel, Chopin, Schumann, and Liszt. All of these solo projects have been enthusiastically received by critics, whether for his "sharp articulation" (Frankfurter Allgemeine), his convincing "sensate mind and exquisite artist of tone color" (Rondo), or his interpretations that come across as "grand, almost visionary narratives" (Kulturspiegel). His playing, NDR Kultur summarizes, is "colorful, thoughtful, courageous, and dreamily assured."

Alexander Krichel is one of today's most sophisticated pianists, according to broadcaster NDR Kultur. For in him, "intellect and emotion, head and heart, meet." Our "Artist in Residence" thus reveals a soul mate with Johannes Brahms. Like no other composer before him, he strove in his piano concertos for the ideal fusion of pianist and orchestra, for the perfect synthesis of concertante and symphonic elements. He achieved this impressively in his Second Piano Concerto. Initially, the piano and orchestra are finely balanced against each other, then the music becomes more energetic and the symphonic structure more visible. In the Andante, Brahms introduces a second solo instrument, the cello, and pushes the pianist into the background. The music flows song-like and melodic, is enlivened by the piano, and the delicate instrumentation lends it a chamber music charm.

Pure joie de vivre and butterflies in the stomach: that's a feeling that unites all three works in our Koblenz concert this year. Gabriel Fauré's fragrant suite Masques et Bergamasques (loosely translated: "Carnival Masks and Dances from Bergamo"), Maurice Ravel's sparkling Piano Concerto, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's radiant Jupiter Symphony combine profound thought and the bluest Mediterranean sky! In this Ravel year, we're collaborating with one of Germany's most prominent young pianists, Alexander Krichel, who will be making his debut with the Beethoven Orchestra in Koblenz. Incidentally, after pushing the Koblenz stage of the Rhein-Mosel-Halle to its limits with works by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss over the past two seasons, we're demonstrating our orchestra's virtuosity and joy of playing this time with a concentrated, classical orchestra!

Steven Sloane was General Musician of the Bochum Symphony Orchestra from 1994 to 2021. He was a member of the board of directors for "RUHR 2010 – European Capital of Culture" and performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, in Sydney, and Tokyo, among others. He conducted major orchestras in Israel and was Music Director of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra.

8th Philharmonic Concert

We conclude our Philharmonic Concert series with three sonic wonders and the great conductor Sebastian Weigle. As General Music Director of the Frankfurt Opera and the Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, ​​he has been crowned Conductor of the Year four times. He has performed brilliantly at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Bayreuth Festival, and the Berlin State Opera. In addition to his engagements in Frankfurt and his numerous conducting engagements at the world's finest opera houses and concert halls, Sebastian Weigle has also been Chief Conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo since 2019.
