Two composers lived, worked, and died in Vienna. One was a paragon of classicism; the other a mystic. One loved the nightlife and applied exceptional technique to a visceral understanding of the human condition. The other was intensely pious and riddled with self-doubt. Yet a kinship exists between the two. Born 68 years apart, these visionary artists helped define the essence of one of the world’s great musical capitals.  This week, ASO music director Nathalie Stutzmann welcomes pianist Sunwook Kim, winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2006, at just 18 years old.

After intermission, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra pulls out all the stops for Anton Bruckner’s muscular, mysterious, and awe-inspiring Symphony No. 7. This performance is part of a two-week celebration of Bruckner in 2024.

Anna Clyne, British “composer of uncommon gifts and unusual methods” (The New York Times), offers us her one-movement orchestral piece, designed, as she says, to “evoke a visual journey for the listener.” South Korean-born Sunwook Kim was the youngest person ever to win the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition. Kim shows off his talents on one of the most beloved concertos of the Romantic era, Schumann’s A-minor masterpiece. Another Romantic era jewel, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade will be brought to vivid life by award-winning conductor and former Dudamel Fellow Tianyi Lu.

Chamber Music featuring Sunwook Kim

Pianist Sunwook Kim—praised for his “keen mind” and “pearly virtuosity” by The Times of London—joins principal players and section musicians from the Los Angeles Philharmonic for two quartets. First is Mozart’s Piano Quartet No. 2, which is vibrantly cheerful despite its technical demands on the performers. By contrast, Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 3 abounds in the kind of Romantic emotional turmoil that can only come from unrequited love.

In 2006, Sunwook Kim won the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition – just 18 years old and the first Asian pianist to do so. With his colourful, virtuosic style of music-making, the South Korean soon found an international audience. He now makes his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker with Unsuk Chin’s brilliant and rhythmically challenging Piano Concerto. Sakari Oramo also conducts Sibelius’s mystical and poetic Second Symphony.
