Inspired by two poems in Walloon by the Liège writer Henri Simon (1856-1939) that tell the tragedy of an oak tree sacrificed on the altar of human greed, Patrick Leterme's new work takes the form of a choral and symphonic performance for orchestra, choir, and percussion. The composition, combining symphonic writing, sounds of nature (foliage, branches, logs), and songs inspired by folk traditions, creates an original score, somewhere between tradition and modernity, that combines the relationship to the land with contemporary ecological issues.
