Yet there's essentially nothing more boring than beginning a story with the main protagonist waking up in the morning. But Gregor Samsa doesn't just wake up—no, he "awakens" from "troubled dreams." A process that is interrupted the next moment by the devastating realization that he has been transformed into a monstrous vermin. And how does Gregor react? After realizing that these aren't one of his restless dreams (for he recognizes the details of his room), he really wants to turn over on his side and go back to sleep. But work calls, and the family is waiting with breakfast...
