The transformation​

"When Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous vermin." This first sentence from Franz Kafka's story "The Metamorphosis" is quite rightly considered one of the best novel openings in literary history. Yet there's essentially nothing more boring than beginning a story with the main protagonist waking up in the morning. But Gregor Samsa doesn't just wake up—no, he "awakens" from "...
