Rachmaninoff, a virtuoso pianist himself, held nothing back when composing for his instrument; Simon Trpčeski is ideally suited for the challenge of Rachmaninoff’s demanding yet romantic First Piano Concerto. In mythology, Orpheus crossed paths with the god of bees — composer Dobrinka Tabakova wove their buzzing sounds into her dramatic Orpheus’ Comet, which also includes references to Monteverdi’s opera L’Orfeo. Finally, Music Director Ken-David Masur conducts Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, a beguiling suite about a clever woman who weaves adventure-filled stories to save her own life over the course of 1,001 nights.

Our 9th season opens with a celebration of contrasting styles, moods, and eras. Bartók’s “Contrasts,” ripe with folk dance melodies from his native Hungary and commissioned by jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman, begins the concert with a bang. Works by living composers Dobrinka Tabakova and Jenni Brandon comprise the middle of the program with two unique depictions of introspection, reflection, and calm. The evening closes with Beethoven’s Quintet for Winds and Piano, Op. 16, a seminal work in the wind chamber music repertoire.

Join us for an enchanting evening of music as Waverly Long takes the stage with her viola for a captivating student recital. This event is set to unfold on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 6:00pm CDT, in the intimate setting of the McClintock Choral and Recital Room, located within the prestigious Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Center for the Musical Arts at 70 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston, IL 60208.

Waverly Long, a talented Bachelor of Music student under the tutelage of Desirée Ruhstrat, will be joined by an ensemble of gifted musicians including Abigail Yoon and Lucy Kim on violin, Samuel Sun on viola, Naomi Aires, Noam Ginsparg, and Kailie Holliday on cello, with Philip Long and Nathan Canfield on piano. Together, they will present a program that spans the breadth of classical music, featuring works by Robert Schumann, Dobrinka Tabakova, Alan Hovhaness, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, and Gabriel Fauré. Highlights include Schumann's Märchenbilder, Op. 113, Tabakova's Whispered Lullaby, and selections from Brahms' String Sextet No. 1 in B-flat Major, Op. 18.

This recital offers a unique opportunity to experience the depth and breadth of classical music through the performances of emerging talents. The event is free, and tickets are not required, making it accessible to all who wish to immerse themselves in the beauty of live music. “A force of liberation, out to help you escape any boxes into which you may have placed the classical concert experience,” (Star Tribune) Artistic Partner Abel Selaocoe returns to the Ordway to lead a program of Baroque and Classical works that showcase the cello. A world-class collaborator on and off stage, Selaocoe will perform both as soloist and as chamber musician with the SPCO. Still in her twenties, Anna Lapwood, is firmly established as a leading organist, conductor and broadcaster, who made her combined Hallé and BBC Proms debut in 2021 with Saint-Saëns’s Third, so called ‘Organ’, Symphony. For her first Manchester Hallé visit, she also plays Poulenc’s eclectic concerto which veers in mood from jocularity and light-heartedness to the grave and profound, reflecting his rediscovery of his Christian faith around this time. Anna also plays a work composed especially for her, Sanctus from Dobrinka Tabakova’s Orbis Factor.
