Fabian Müller has already performed all of Ludwig van Beethoven's piano sonatas in the Pierre Boulez Hall; now he will play Mozart's A major concerto, composed in 1786 while he was working on Le nozze di Figaro . Norwegian conductor Tabita Berglund will be heard conducting the Staatskapelle Berlin for the first time, inviting the audience to immerse themselves in the meditative sound world of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, who celebrates his 90th birthday a few days before the concert. The music of Dobrinka Tabakova, which references a melody by Franz Schubert, leads into a "kind of weightlessness through the cosmos, past stars and planets." Schubert's enigmatic Symphony in B minor will be heard next – music that oscillates between lyrical intensity and gloom, between light and shadow.

Le mystère des voix bulgares: this was the name of a legendary record (or rather a series of records) that electrified music fans all over the world: rough, rubbing, flattering, incredibly rhythmic choral sounds that had never been heard before! Or had they? Béla Bartók, the great Hungarian folk music researcher, had already poured them into his string quartet in the 1930s, and Bulgarian ensembles and choirs had never stopped cultivating the country’s musical traditions. East and West, church sounds and fast-paced village bands meet here. The quartet around our violinist with Bulgarian roots, Maria Geißler, embarks on a virtuoso and sensuous search for traces.

Finally, Music Director Ken-David Masur conducts Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, a beguiling suite about a clever woman who weaves adventure-filled stories to save her own life over the course of 1,001 nights.

Waverly Long, a talented Bachelor of Music student under the tutelage of Desirée Ruhstrat, will be joined by an ensemble of gifted musicians including Abigail Yoon and Lucy Kim on violin, Samuel Sun on viola, Naomi Aires, Noam Ginsparg, and Kailie Holliday on cello, with Philip Long and Nathan Canfield on piano. Together, they will present a program that spans the breadth of classical music, featuring works by Robert Schumann, Dobrinka Tabakova, Alan Hovhaness, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, and Gabriel Fauré. Highlights include Schumann's Märchenbilder, Op. 113, Tabakova's Whispered Lullaby, and selections from Brahms' String Sextet No. 1 in B-flat Major, Op. 18.

Still in her twenties, Anna Lapwood, is firmly established as a leading organist, conductor and broadcaster, who made her combined Hallé and BBC Proms debut in 2021 with Saint-Saëns’s Third, so called ‘Organ’, Symphony. For her first Manchester Hallé visit, she also plays Poulenc’s eclectic concerto which veers in mood from jocularity and light-heartedness to the grave and profound, reflecting his rediscovery of his Christian faith around this time. Anna also plays a work composed especially for her, Sanctus from Dobrinka Tabakova’s Orbis Factor.

"Orpheus' Comet" by the Bulgarian-English composer Dobrinka Tabakova is a homage to Monteverdi's opera "L'Orfeo" and the Orpheus myth in general. At first, a buzzing swarm of bees appears to be circling the orchestra—an allusion to the beekeeper Aristaeus, who (according to the myth) was responsible for the death of Orpheus's lover, Eurydice. Gradually, solemn melodies emerge, and at the end, the (slightly altered) opening hymn from "L'Orfeo" resounds, pompous as a stadium fanfare.

Expect the unexpected. The Soviet authorities wanted Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony to be a blockbuster epic, but instead they got a sardonic showstopper with a wicked sense of humour – music that entertains even while it subverts. No wonder they banned it! Beethoven’s Violin Concerto begins with a drum solo and a hymn from the woodwinds – it’s only later that it lays bare the poetic, singing soul of the violin. And Dobrinka Tabakova – a British composer with a knack for telling stories – takes her inspiration from bees, in a sparky, Ivor Novello Award-winning celebration of life. Delyana Lazarova conducted the world premiere of Swarm Fanfares, and she’ll make an inspirational partner to RPO Artist-in-Residence Liya Petrova as she soars free in Beethoven’s radiant Violin Concerto.
