The jaw-dropping virtuosity, power and nuance demanded by these big works makes this a program of exciting moments. Two of Beethoven’s best-loved sonatas, the shadowy, poetic Moonlight and the exuberant Waldstein, are paired with Ravel’s fiendishly difficult Gaspard de la Nuit – one of the most demanding pieces in the piano repertoire. In Isata’s hands, the vivid atmospheres and poignant intensity of these works become thrillingly present.

‘So fluent, so confident, so glad to be alive’ is how The Times describes Timothy Ridout’s viola playing. He brings those qualities and more to this concert, given in partnership with the Munich Chamber Orchestra, which marked its 75th anniversary last year. Their programme includes Dobrinka Tabakova’s vibrant three-movement Suite in the Old Style and the young Benjamin Britten’s equally rousing Simple Symphony.

A truly exceptional pianist of huge nuance, expression and communicative abilities returns to this year’s festival with a recital at Merton College Chapel bookended by Beethoven. Isata Kanneh-Mason plays the composer’s iconic Moonlight and Waldstein sonatas while also bringing us the striking imagery and technical virtuosity of Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit. After that come two works by one of the most imaginative and original composers working today Dobrinka Tabakova, including another moon-themed work – her luminous depiction of a lunar phenomenon from darkness to shine to settled glow, Halo.

"Orpheus' Comet" by the Bulgarian-English composer Dobrinka Tabakova is a homage to Monteverdi's opera "L'Orfeo" and the Orpheus myth in general. At first, a buzzing swarm of bees appears to be circling the orchestra—an allusion to the beekeeper Aristaeus, who (according to the myth) was responsible for the death of Orpheus's lover, Eurydice. Gradually, solemn melodies emerge, and at the end, the (slightly altered) opening hymn from "L'Orfeo" resounds, pompous as a stadium fanfare.

Isata Kanneh-Mason, whose playing has been called “calmly commanding” and “unfailingly subtle” by The New York Times, makes her SLSO debut in a recital with music inspired by nighttime and daybreak. From the timeless opening notes of Beethoven’s “Moonlight” sonata to Dobrinka Tabakova’s starlight-hued Nocturne and Ravel’s haunting Gaspard de la Nuit (Gaspard of the Night), in the hands of Kanneh-Mason, the piano travels from sparkling to moody and contemplative.

Following three acclaimed PCMS performances, including two with brother Sheku, Isata Kanneh-Mason—one of Britain’s most exciting young pianists—returns to Philadelphia for an imaginative solo recital. Her program encompasses Beethoven’s Moonlight and Waldstein sonatas, new works by Bulgarian-British composer Dobrinka Tabakova, and Ravel’s epic Gaspard de la nuit, one of the most demanding virtuoso works in the entire piano literature. “Kanneh-Mason realizes every expressive moment with sensitivity” (The Guardian).

After losing his right arm in the First World War, pianist Paul Wittgenstein refused to give up his art and commissioned Maurice Ravel to write his Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. The result is one of the most captivating works in the piano repertoire, blending jazzy rhythms with profound beauty. Pianist Cédric Tiberghien brings this masterpiece to life. Jean Sibelius’ First Symphony combines a Tchaikovskian tradition with hints of the unique sound world he would later develop. With great flair, Nuno Coelho leads the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra through this rich and colourful programme.

Celebrated for its innovative and imaginative programming, the Manchester Collective repeatedly succeeds in uncovering exciting thematic threads and establishing unexpected connections. In their new program, "Albion, Now," they take the audience on a journey through the contemporary British music scene. Christian Mason's vibrant "Sardinian Songbook" encounters Errollyn Wallen's lyrical sound language of "Five Postcards," Anna Meredith's wild swarm of flies in "Tuggemo," in which strings and electronica buzz around each other, and other discoverable new creations from Great Britain—formerly known as Albion. The Manchester Collective thus draws on the rich world of myth and legend of old England and transforms it into a contemporary soundscape.

Fabian Müller has already performed all of Ludwig van Beethoven's piano sonatas in the Pierre Boulez Hall; now he will play Mozart's A major concerto, composed in 1786 while he was working on Le nozze di Figaro . Norwegian conductor Tabita Berglund will be heard conducting the Staatskapelle Berlin for the first time, inviting the audience to immerse themselves in the meditative sound world of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, who celebrates his 90th birthday a few days before the concert. The music of Dobrinka Tabakova, which references a melody by Franz Schubert, leads into a "kind of weightlessness through the cosmos, past stars and planets." Le mystère des voix bulgares: this was the name of a legendary record (or rather a series of records) that electrified music fans all over the world: rough, rubbing, flattering, incredibly rhythmic choral sounds that had never been heard before! Or had they? Béla Bartók, the great Hungarian folk music researcher, had already poured them into his string quartet in the 1930s, and Bulgarian ensembles and choirs had never stopped cultivating the country’s musical traditions. East and West, church sounds and fast-paced village bands meet here. The quartet around our violinist with Bulgarian roots, Maria Geißler, embarks on a virtuoso and sensuous search for traces.
