María de Buenos Aires represents the New World, new music, tango nuevo , and a new type of opera – tango operita , whose musical foundation is the insane rhythm and mood of the tango, a dance born on the southeastern coast of Latin America. The folk tango argentino had its bard, Astor Piazzolla, a composer-poet who created a new style of presenting this passionate dance, drawing inspiration from Stravinsky, Bartók, and classical musical forms, but also jazz and electronic rock – elevating tango to the status of a musical art.

Fancy a few artistic extravaganzas? Then the third palace concert of the season is just the right place for you. We've got a musical brawl by Biber on offer, a monkey dance à la Purcell, and wild dance numbers by Rameau. Bach's son, Wilhelm Friedemann, also goes against the grain of the laws of harmony. Astor Piazzolla's work isn't quite as bizarre, but then again, the tango was long considered extravagant. And Piazzolla, in particular, repeatedly built stylistic bridges to Baroque music, for example in his version of the "Four Seasons." Where Vivaldi celebrates country life, here we wander through the dance halls of Buenos Aires—including a fugue in "Spring."

The viola figures prominently in tonight's Pro Musica concert. Dvořák's 3rd String Quintet has added an extra viola to the standard string quartet and dates from Dvořák's time in America in the early 1890s, where he went all out to find the American 'primordial music', just as he had done with his own Czech folk music idiom. We can therefore look forward to both tribal rhythms, folk tunes and Dvořák's take on what could be a new, American national anthem.

Five-time GRAMMY Award-winning Nicaraguan conductor Giancarlo Guerrero leads the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in a south-of-the-border immersion, packing plenty of heat into a fusion of Afro-Caribbean, Central and South American traditions, including the tango-infused Sinfonía Buenos Aires. The renowned Venezuelan soloist Pacho Flores dips into Mexico's rich trumpet-playing tradition for a piece written by him and for him by Arturo Márquez.

The Romanian composer and violinist George Enescu, whose works are inspired by Romanian folk music, is one of the greatest composers of his country. While the organ can be quite a loud instrument, it can also be used in a softer and more subtle way. With works like Handel’s G minor Organ Concerto and movements from Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and Coleridge-Taylor’s Nonet, this program will demonstrate the versatility and more intimate side of our instrument. Later, tango-inspired rhythms and Latin flair take center stage in Piazzolla’s Libertango, performed in collaboration with the Dearborn Youth Symphony, adding a fresh, youthful spark to the evening.

Forget everything you know about the accordion—Théo Ould is here to blow your mind. Recognized by Le Monde for his “personality that expresses itself naturally in fantasy, in the fresh and enchanting sense of the term,” this astounding French accordionist makes his Princeton University Concerts debut with a bold, tango-inspired program that proves his instrument’s rightful place in the classical world. At just 24, Ould became the first accordionist nominated as a Newly Discovered Talent at the Victoires de la Musique Classique awards, and he is redefining what the accordion can do—blending Baroque elegance, Romantic passion, and cutting-edge contemporary works (some featuring electronics) written just for him, including by Princeton University graduate student composers. Choir and tango? And even a liturgical text together with the most sensual of all dances, how does that fit together? Very well, as you can hear in this concert. In fact, it is a concert of discoveries. Because when do you ever hear a bandoneon in a concert hall? The sister of the accordion was invented in Chemnitz and began its triumphal march when the bandoneon made its entrance into South American tango orchestras at the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, it has become indispensable and is praised in Argentina as "the best German invention." Bandoneon virtuoso and composer Omar Massa, originally from Buenos Aires, is considered the successor to the tango revolutionary Astor Piazzolla. Inspired by the new paths pioneered by Piazzolla, Massa combines the authentic sound of his hometown of Buenos Aires with the European chamber music tradition in his own compositions. In their exciting program,  "Buenos Aires Today," the trio members follow in the footsteps of Tango Nuevo and, enriched with the sounds of the 21st century, take it not only in new directions but also to new heights.

The cello, with its rich timbre, its vibrato that brings the sound to life, and its unparalleled velvety sound, is the instrument that is said to come closest to the human voice. It is therefore quite natural that the cello voice of Cyrille Tricoire de Haro, supersolo cellist of the Orchestre National Montpellier, dialogues with that of the soprano Hwanyoo Lee, in this abundant and eclectic program, rich in emotion.

Stars such as festival prize winners Julian Bliss and Sebastian Klinger, pianist Matthias Kirschnereit, and violinist Michael Barenboim are among the lecturers at the Rostock University of Music and Theatre's summer campus. The best course participants will perform three concerts with the North German Philharmonic Orchestra Rostock at the end of the program—and their famous teachers will also be on stage. The MDR Music Summer opens its 34th concert series in the European Capital of Culture 2025 with a brilliant opening. In collaboration with the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Chemnitz, soprano Fatma Said, and Omar Massa on the bandoneon, the MDR Symphony Orchestra presents a colorful program characterized by South American sounds, in which the bandoneon, whose origins lie in 19th-century Chemnitz, plays a prominent role. Marcus Merkel, one of Germany's most exciting young conductors of our time, assumes the overall musical direction.

This concert transports us to Paris to celebrate legendary pedagogue Nadia Boulanger and some of her remarkable students. From Aaron Copland to Astor Piazzolla to Quincy Jones, many young talents sought her guidance, solidifying her legacy as the Grande Dame of 20th-century composition. The program also includes works by Stravinsky, whom she admired and advised on several of his pieces, music by her talented sister Lili Boulanger, and the G minor Piano Quartet of her own teacher, Gabriel Fauré.

That's unfortunate: If you blow into a saxophone, it immediately sounds like jazz. But in 1840 Adolphe Sax actually only wanted to close the tonal gap between the oboe and the clarinet in the orchestra with his glittering reed instrument. Today, many saxophonists are working hard on their return to classical music - in the case of the Signum Saxophone Quartet, primarily with the help of their own arrangements. Since the four saxophonists repeatedly emphasize how much they have learned from the strings of the Artemis Quartet, we can look forward to their blown version of Dvořák's American string quartet. Erwin Schulhoff, who felt close to Dada, Communism and jazz, was very fond of the saxophone, and so the arrangement of his string pieces op. 14 is just as fitting as the tonal re-dedication of Ástor Piazzolla's Suite del Ángel . After all, Piazzolla is about angels dancing tango. And about an angel who dies (in the final movement, La Muerte del Ángel) – after a fugue, of all things…

We are very excited to be ending our season with the first ever visit to the UK of the internationally famous Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra of Colón Opera.  This concert is of particular significance as we celebrate Bradford’s year as the UK’s City of Culture, with a performance of our own city’s great composer Frederik Delius’s piano concerto, performed by the distinguished British pianist Mark Bebbington.  Prior to the tour, this great Delius work will receive its Argentinian premiere, a concert that has been inspired by our position as the UK’s City of Culture.  The programme will open with Wagner’s romantic Prelude & Liebestod from Tristan & Isolde and in the second half there will be music from Bizet’s much-loved Carmen Suite, Tchaikovsky’s lyrical Swan Lake suite and the programme will end with two dazzling, scintillating show stoppers from two of Argentina’s greatest composers - Alberto Ginastera and Astor Piazzolla.

Indulge in the romance and lush worlds of operas by Puccini and Gounod sung by Ana Isabella Castro, a young local soprano that is not to be missed. And be dazzled by the Canadian premiere of Levy’s Harmonica Concerto, an energetic and extremely virtuosic work to be played by Argentine leading harmonica virtuoso Federico Linari who will also demonstrate the intricate technique of diatonic harmonica in two other selections from Tango to Jazz. Radiant rhythms and vibrant melodies await in this colourful celebración hispana, featuring Jimmy López Bellido’s spirited tribute to his Afro-Peruvian heritage, and Karen Gomyo’s blazing take on Astor Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, where classical music meets Argentinian tango. The fiesta culminates in the south of Spain with Bizet’s Carmen Suites, including the crowd-pleasing favourites “Habanera”, “Toreador Song”, and more.

On Thursday, April 17, Chicago Philharmonic presents Artist in Residence Njioma Chinyere Grevious, a quickly rising classical music star known for her passionate and virtuosic talent. Among Grevious’ many accolades, she is the winner of the Robert F. Smith First Prize award in the Senior Division of the Sphinx Competition, a 2024 Avery Fischer Career Grant winner, and one of Classic FM’s 2024 Rising Stars.
