Please join the SSO for our season opener featuring an array of fascinating and appealing music by Canadian, American, Mexican and Argentinian composers. British Columbia’s Christine Donkin wrote her Four Poems in 2015, based on the poetry of New Brunswick poet Charles Roberts. Everyone will recognise Aaron Copland’s beloved Simple Gifts and The Little Horses, as well as Astor Piazzolla’s evocative tangos Libertango and Milonga del ángel. Colourfully orchestrated with an emphasis on instruments typical of the Veracruz style (trumpet, harp, and violins) and driven by its distinctive rhythm, José Moncayo’s Huapango has become an enduring classic.

Following a long and highly successful career as both a solo and a collaborative pianist, as well as a festival and concert series programmer, Kathryn Stott has decided to step down from public recitals from the end of this year – though many of her other creative activities will continue. Wigmore audiences will be delighted to partake in this special celebration of her exceptional artistry in her last London recital appearance.

As part of Tippet Rise’s Wander series, this concert will take place among works of art located on the art center’s Cottonwood Campus, including Iron Tree by Ai Weiwei and Daydreams and Cursive Takes a Holiday by Patrick Dougherty. Performing together as a group, returning flutist Jessica Sindell will be joined by debuting artists including oboist Tamer Edlebi, clarinetist Afendi Yusuf, bassoonist Jake Thonis, and horn player Nathaniel Silberschlag, offering a unique opportunity to hear these talented musicians outside their orchestral settings. The group will take the audience on a trip to Hungary, Argentina, and back to the United States with music by György Ligeti, Endre Szervánszky, Astor Piazzolla, and Samuel Barber.

This concert marks the Tippet debut of two multi-faceted artists – Grammy-nominated violinist Tessa Lark and classical and jazz harpist Charles Overton. Tessa Lark, consistently praised by critics and audiences for her astounding range of sounds, technical agility, and musical elegance, is also a highly acclaimed fiddler in the tradition of her native Kentucky. Charles Overton is a frequent performer with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops, as well as jazz clubs throughout the northeast. He aims to create a musical environment that is accessible, exciting, and resonates deeply with audiences. Lark and Overton are performers, arrangers, and composers of a program including early romantic virtuoso music by Camille Saint-Saëns, Eugène Ysaÿe, and Jean Cras; a traditional fiddle work “Boy in the Gap”; and the Morgan Lewis jazz standard "How High the Moon". Their performance will conclude with a trip to Argentina for Astor Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango.

Kunsthallen Rønnebæksholm and the local Ensemble Storstrøm continue the successful collaboration on Writers' Concerts.

Last year, Rønnebæksholm and Ensemble Storstrøm introduced a new format that combines literature and meeting a current author with live classical music. It was some exciting experiences, where words and music reinforce each other. Our joint recital will present beautiful music spanning from the baroque to the modern era. The first half of the recital will feature Anaeli Gutierrez on flute, accompanied in two pieces by Lauren Hsu on piano, and Enmanuel Rodriguez on guitar. Listeners will hear contrasts between lively and technical passages such as in Piazolla's Histoire du Tango - Bordel 1900 and Kuhlau’s Variations on The Last Rose of Summer, as well as elegant lyrical passages found in Telemann’s Fantasie No. 5 and Suite en Duo by Jean Cras. Our second half of the recital will bring pieces from the renowned composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Esteban Salas Villela will perform Bach's Cello Suite Number 1, arranged for the classical guitar. On this program, we honor the 200th anniversary of the world premiere of perhaps THE most famous piece of orchestral music ever written: Beethoven’s towering Ninth Symphony – the first symphony ever to feature vocalists and a chorus. It was judged to be the greatest symphony ever when it was composed in 1824 – so great, in fact, that Brahms famously avoided writing his first symphony for decades, scared to death of the comparison with Beethoven’s masterpiece. The sung text is taken from the German poet Schiller’s “Ode to Joy,” a paean to what used to be referred to as the “Brotherhood of Man”, but which is now better understood as the vast interconnectedness of the entire human species. Lofty ideas and unforgettable music. The spirit of the work truly is an ‘ode to joy’ and will leave listeners feeling uplifted, connected, and awed by the ability for music to highlight the best aspects of our shared humanity.

Passions run high in our third Masterworks. Music from, and about, Spain frame a virtuoso tango-inflected violin concerto from Argentina. We open with excerpts from Bizet’s Carmen— including the indelible Seguedille and Toréadors. Though French, Bizet brilliantly captures the swagger and ardor of the Iberian spirit. Spaniard Manuel de Falla’s energized, colorful ballet score, written for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes (of Rite of Spring fame), overflowing with drama, high spirits, and, of course, castanets, occupies the second half. In between Astor Piazzolla’s homage to Vivaldi fuses classical forms with the passions of tango.

The mesmerising Kosmos Ensemble, known for redefining the relationship between classical and world music, will perform at the Assembly Hall in Worthing. The program includes Errolyn Wallen’s dazzling Triple Concerto, composed especially for the ensemble, and Igor Shamo’s Accordion Concerto, showcasing Miloš Milivojević as the soloist. Grace Williams’s Sea Sketches, reflecting the coast around her birthplace in South Wales, and Parry’s Lady Radnor Suite, composed for the pioneering conductor Lady Radnor, will also be performed. Featuring the winner of the 2nd Annual Concert Orchestra Concerto Competition, this concert also includes music from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein and Astor Piazzolla’s sumptuous orchestral work, Tangazo. The Peabody Percussion Group, led by faculty artist Jeff Stern (MM ’14, Percussion), performs a program portrait of American composer Garth Neustadter, including his percussion sextet with video work Seaborne, his arrangement of Astor Piazzolla’s Le Grand Tango, and Memory of Water for choir and percussion sextet, for which the PPG will be joined by Peabody’s NEXT Ensemble, led by Director of Choral Studies Beth Willer.

Reflections on love languages. Human concepts of love and romance, as well as the complicated and sometimes messy emotions associated with them, have remained the primary basis of inspiration for artistic expression throughout history. Music and dance in particular, have been most popularly used in courtship and conveying adoration toward a partner. This concert will explore the love languages of music and dance that came about in the 1920s and 30s, when tango first burst into the mainstream. Classical guitarist, Krzysztof Meisinger will present an audibly stunning interpretation of some of the most famous tango pieces ever written.
