That's unfortunate: If you blow into a saxophone, it immediately sounds like jazz. But in 1840 Adolphe Sax actually only wanted to close the tonal gap between the oboe and the clarinet in the orchestra with his glittering reed instrument. Today, many saxophonists are working hard on their return to classical music - in the case of the Signum Saxophone Quartet, primarily with the help of their own arrangements. Since the four saxophonists repeatedly emphasize how much they have learned from the strings of the Artemis Quartet, we can look forward to their blown version of Dvořák's American string quartet. Erwin Schulhoff, who felt close to Dada, Communism and jazz, was very fond of the saxophone, and so the arrangement of his string pieces op. 14 is just as fitting as the tonal re-dedication of Ástor Piazzolla's Suite del Ángel . After all, Piazzolla is about angels dancing tango. And about an angel who dies (in the final movement, La Muerte del Ángel) – after a fugue, of all things…

We are very excited to be ending our season with the first ever visit to the UK of the internationally famous Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra of Colón Opera.  This concert is of particular significance as we celebrate Bradford’s year as the UK’s City of Culture, with a performance of our own city’s great composer Frederik Delius’s piano concerto, performed by the distinguished British pianist Mark Bebbington.  Prior to the tour, this great Delius work will receive its Argentinian premiere, a concert that has been inspired by our position as the UK’s City of Culture.  The programme will open with Wagner’s romantic Prelude & Liebestod from Tristan & Isolde and in the second half there will be music from Bizet’s much-loved Carmen Suite, Tchaikovsky’s lyrical Swan Lake suite and the programme will end with two dazzling, scintillating show stoppers from two of Argentina’s greatest composers - Alberto Ginastera and Astor Piazzolla.

We’re proud to present an evening of evocative impressions of Latin America with works from three composers you’ll recognize and one we’re proud to introduce this season. Venezuelan / American composer and cellist Paul Desenne, who passed away in 2023 at age 63, was a founding member of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra and resident composer for El Sistema. His 2013 Concerto for 2 Flutes will feature Robert Langevin, Principal Flute of the New York Philharmonic, and Marco Granados, one of the world’s leading flutists in Latin American music. The program opens with a lyrical, edgy work by Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla, followed by Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Bach-inspired representations of Brazilian life. We’ll finish the evening with American icon Aaron Copland, who infused Mexican folk music into his rousing work.

You can simply go to a concert at the Philharmonie, spontaneously, during your lunch break – and with free admission: every Wednesday at 13:00 between September and June. British Columbia’s Christine Donkin wrote her Four Poems in 2015, based on the poetry of New Brunswick poet Charles Roberts. Everyone will recognise Aaron Copland’s beloved Simple Gifts and The Little Horses, as well as Astor Piazzolla’s evocative tangos Libertango and Milonga del ángel. Colourfully orchestrated with an emphasis on instruments typical of the Veracruz style (trumpet, harp, and violins) and driven by its distinctive rhythm, José Moncayo’s Huapango has become an enduring classic.

As part of Tippet Rise’s Wander series, this concert will take place among works of art located on the art center’s Cottonwood Campus, including Iron Tree by Ai Weiwei and Daydreams and Cursive Takes a Holiday by Patrick Dougherty. This concert marks the Tippet debut of two multi-faceted artists – Grammy-nominated violinist Tessa Lark and classical and jazz harpist Charles Overton. Tessa Lark, consistently praised by critics and audiences for her astounding range of sounds, technical agility, and musical elegance, is also a highly acclaimed fiddler in the tradition of her native Kentucky. Charles Overton is a frequent performer with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops, as well as jazz clubs throughout the northeast. He aims to create a musical environment that is accessible, exciting, and resonates deeply with audiences. Lark and Overton are performers, arrangers, and composers of a program including early romantic virtuoso music by Camille Saint-Saëns, Eugène Ysaÿe, and Jean Cras; a traditional fiddle work “Boy in the Gap”; and the Morgan Lewis jazz standard "How High the Moon". Their performance will conclude with a trip to Argentina for Astor Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango.

Last year, Rønnebæksholm and Ensemble Storstrøm introduced a new format that combines literature and meeting a current author with live classical music. It was some exciting experiences, where words and music reinforce each other. Both the concrete expression of the text and the more abstract form of the music are experienced in a new way when they are put together.

Our joint recital will present beautiful music spanning from the baroque to the modern era. The first half of the recital will feature Anaeli Gutierrez on flute, accompanied in two pieces by Lauren Hsu on piano, and Enmanuel Rodriguez on guitar. Listeners will hear contrasts between lively and technical passages such as in Piazolla's Histoire du Tango - Bordel 1900 and Kuhlau’s Variations on The Last Rose of Summer, as well as elegant lyrical passages found in Telemann’s Fantasie No. 5 and Suite en Duo by Jean Cras. Our second half of the recital will bring pieces from the renowned composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Esteban Salas Villela will perform Bach's Cello Suite Number 1, arranged for the classical guitar. These pieces allude to dances from the baroque era that still resonate through time.
