The MDR Music Summer opens its 34th concert series in the European Capital of Culture 2025 with a brilliant opening. That's unfortunate: If you blow into a saxophone, it immediately sounds like jazz. But in 1840 Adolphe Sax actually only wanted to close the tonal gap between the oboe and the clarinet in the orchestra with his glittering reed instrument. Today, many saxophonists are working hard on their return to classical music - in the case of the Signum Saxophone Quartet, primarily with the help of their own arrangements. Since the four saxophonists repeatedly emphasize how much they have learned from the strings of the Artemis Quartet, we can look forward to their blown version of Dvořák's American string quartet. Erwin Schulhoff, who felt close to Dada, Communism and jazz, was very fond of the saxophone, and so the arrangement of his string pieces op. 14 is just as fitting as the tonal re-dedication of Ástor Piazzolla's Suite del Ángel . After all, Piazzolla is about angels dancing tango. And about an angel who dies (in the final movement, La Muerte del Ángel) – after a fugue, of all things…

We are very excited to be ending our season with the first ever visit to the UK of the internationally famous Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra of Colón Opera.  This concert is of particular significance as we celebrate Bradford’s year as the UK’s City of Culture, with a performance of our own city’s great composer Frederik Delius’s piano concerto, performed by the distinguished British pianist Mark Bebbington.  Prior to the tour, this great Delius work will receive its Argentinian premiere, a concert that has been inspired by our position as the UK’s City of Culture.  The programme will open with Wagner’s romantic Prelude & Liebestod from Tristan & Isolde and in the second half there will be music from Bizet’s much-loved Carmen Suite, Tchaikovsky’s lyrical Swan Lake suite and the programme will end with two dazzling, scintillating show stoppers from two of Argentina’s greatest composers - Alberto Ginastera and Astor Piazzolla.

This season’s Czech Chamber Music Society curator Petr Popelka dons another of his many musical hats for this programme: playing the double bass, the instrument with which he began his career. For his final curated concert this year, he joins the Elphier Quartett for Dvořák’s String Quintet No. 2. The rest of the programme is devoted to newer music including a work by Astor Piazzolla, the legendary king of tango.

Guitar Department Recital

In honour of the 2024 Year of Czech Music, cellist Jiří Bárta and pianist Terezie Fialová present a concert with the music of Leoš Janáček at the heart of their programme. Also presented will be music from the less distant past by one of the most prominent Czech composers of the 1960s avant-garde, Marek Kopelent.

We’re proud to present an evening of evocative impressions of Latin America with works from three composers you’ll recognize and one we’re proud to introduce this season. Venezuelan / American composer and cellist Paul Desenne, who passed away in 2023 at age 63, was a founding member of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra and resident composer for El Sistema. His 2013 Concerto for 2 Flutes will feature Robert Langevin, Principal Flute of the New York Philharmonic, and Marco Granados, one of the world’s leading flutists in Latin American music. The program opens with a lyrical, edgy work by Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla, followed by Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Bach-inspired representations of Brazilian life. We’ll finish the evening with American icon Aaron Copland, who infused Mexican folk music into his rousing work.

Born in the slums of Buenos Aires “one day when God was drunk,” María turns to the city in a desperate quest for freedom, falling in love with its tango rhythms. A dark, surreal story told in song and dance, this “tango opera” by the legendary Argentine composer Ástor Piazzolla has been widely acclaimed since its 1968 premiere.
