First up, the UK premiere of Jessie Montgomery’s Coincident Dances. Frenetic energy and a multicultural aural palette radiate in this depiction of the sounds of New York. The second UK premiere comes in the form of Elena Kats-Chernin’s violin concerto Fantasie im Wintergarten, written for tonight’s soloist, Emily Sun. Inspired by a 1920s silent film set in the fairground circus Wintergarten in Berlin, the concerto explores the contrast of love and betrayal – from light to shadow, tango to chaos, virtuosity to suspended lyricism. To close we turn to Huw Watkins’ Second Symphony, written during the pandemic this large scale work, whilst relatively short, packs a punchy delivery of ravishing texture and expansive melody.

Maestro Daniel Black’s program promises barn-burning energy! Bookending the concert are Jessie Montgomery’s Coincident Dances and Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. Montgomery’s work is inspired by the mosaic of dance music found in New York’s various subcultures, from samba to techno, English consort to mbira; Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony–famously referred to as the “apotheosis of the dance” by Richard Wagner–is infused with driving, dance-like rhythms throughout, especially in the outer movements. The symphony culminates in one of the most explosive finales of the entire repertoire. The piece has a kind of narrative that begins with fleeting nostalgia and transforms into ecstatic celebration.” Samuel Barber, born in West Chester PA in 1910, wrote one of the great American violin concertos. Finishing the concert is Beethoven’s 8th symphony, a piece full of humor, élan, and a light-hearted sparkle. Join us for an unforgettable afternoon of music and cultural celebration with the Sphinx Virtuosi at Caramoor on July 7, 2024, in Katonah, NY. This dynamic and inspiring self-conducted string orchestra, known as the flagship performing entity of the Sphinx Organization, is dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts. Comprising some of the nation’s top young Black and Latinx professional musicians, Sphinx Virtuosi serves as a cultural and diversity ambassador across the United States and abroad.

The concert will take place at the Orchestral Music Venetian Theater at 4:00pm, with a special pre-concert conversation with members of Sphinx Virtuosi at 3:00pm. The program features music by some of today’s most compelling Black and Latinx composers, including Quenton Xavier Blache, Javier Favias, Andrea Casarrubios, Adolphus Hailstork, Jessie Montgomery, and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson.

Seating options include general admission with premium reserved seating available, as well as Garden Listening tickets for a more casual concert environment. Garden Listening tickets are $20, free for Members and children under 18, allowing you to enjoy the concert broadcast with audio only on Friends Field.

Fellowship alum Kyle Dickson, who's gone on to conduct orchestras across the United States, leads the ensemble in this happy reunion. In addition, this concert features several vocal soloists from the Festival's Vocal Fellowship program.

Here, Carlos Kalmar pairs overtures written for Beethoven's French Revolution-era drama Fidelio with two works championing freedom and social justice in our own country: Jessie Montgomery's Five Freedom Songs, based on the historical anthology Slave Songs of the United States, and Chicago-composer Margaret Bonds's Montgomery Variations, dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Jonathon Heyward closes his debut season as BSO Music Director drenched in the unabashed emotions of Richard Strauss’ swan song, sung by Artist in Residence Christine Goerke. Respighi’s evergreen depictions of towering pine trees around the Eternal City anchor the timelessness of this art form, while the future comes forward in a new work commissioned from hometown hero James Lee III. In Records from a Vanishing City, Jessie Montgomery pines for the gritty, multicultural Manhattan of her youth, spent in her father’s Lower East Side rehearsal studio for rock and jazz bands.

Cellist Thomas Mesa performs two works: a new cello concerto by Jessie Montgomery, current composer-in-Residence at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, one of the most beloved works in the cello repertoire. Bookending the program are Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides, inspired by the composer’s travel to Scotland, and Beethoven’s engaging second symphony.

This program came about through deep familial relationships and friendships that have yielded profoundly personal and compelling music. Gabriel Kahane's Heirloom, a new piano concerto written for his father, the renowned pianist Jeffrey Kahane, channels numerous themes of cross-generational and cross-cultural musical inspiration; from a paternal grandmother escaping the Holocaust in 1938 ("My Grandmother Knew Alban Berg”), to the tension between classical and popular music forms ("Guitars in the Attic"), to the wonder of seeing the world through the eyes of his young daughter ("Vera's Chicken-Powered Transit Machine").
