Our ACMF artists perform works by Mozart and Brahms using unprecedented instrument pairings of cello, viola and clarinet to create new sound worlds. We’ll hear Mahler’s early Piano Quartet from the beginning of his compositional career before he became the great symphonist of the early 20th century and Jessie Montgomery’s profound pandemic-era work “Peace”.

This dynamic and inspiring self-conducted string orchestra, known as the flagship performing entity of the Sphinx Organization, is dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts. Comprising some of the nation’s top young Black and Latinx professional musicians, Sphinx Virtuosi serves as a cultural and diversity ambassador across the United States and abroad.

This program came about through deep familial relationships and friendships that have yielded profoundly personal and compelling music. Gabriel Kahane's Heirloom, a new piano concerto written for his father, the renowned pianist Jeffrey Kahane, channels numerous themes of cross-generational and cross-cultural musical inspiration; from a paternal grandmother escaping the Holocaust in 1938 ("My Grandmother Knew Alban Berg”), to the tension between classical and popular music forms ("Guitars in the Attic"), to the wonder of seeing the world through the eyes of his young daughter ("Vera's Chicken-Powered Transit Machine").

“Few string quartets can command the stage like the Calder Quartet,” declared The Washington Post of this versatile and vibrant ensemble that excels equally at composer collaborations and standard-setting performances of classics. They set out to do just that with two programs mixing it up with chamber music milestones and thrilling new voices. In this program, Antoine Hunter, a superbly gifted dancer/choreographer, founder of Urban Jazz Dance Company, and advocate for the Deaf community, expresses his experience in a hearing world through dance.

Though Antonín Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings headlines this program around intimate works for chamber orchestra, a new arrangement of Stefan L. Smith’s My Young Friend lies at its heart. Originally a duet for bassoon and piano commissioned by SPCO Principal Bassoon Andrew Brady and inspired by original poetry of Brady’s grandmother, this will be the world premiere of the orchestrated version commissioned by the SPCO.

Abel Selaocoe’s expansive imagination knows no barriers — our newest Artistic Partner embraces singing, dancing, composition and improvisation equally in joyful and powerful music-making. His recent cello concerto, Four Spirits, is drawn from his South African roots and seeks to create a communal experience with the audience. Selaocoe weaves together many traditions on a program that also features music by composers Julia Perry and Jessie Montgomery.

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s towering Piano Concerto No. 2 opens with pulse-pounding passion, soothes you in the sentimental middle movement and sets you on the edge of your seat with its fiendishly difficult finale featuring the return of the sensational pianist Joyce Yang, a laureate of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Guest conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya leads The Phoenix Symphony in Jessie Montgomery’s Hymn for Everyone, a meditation for orchestra full of washes of colors and timbre, and in Antonín Dvořák’s cheery and lyrical Symphony No. 8, inspired by the Bohemian folk music of his native land.

Chicago Opera Theater Music Director Lidiya Yankovskaya leads musicians from the CSO in a program highlighting composer-performers, including three-time Grammy Award-nominated violinist and composer Curtis Stewart. His stunning new violin concerto for string orchestra, Embrace, incorporates testimonies by members of the Chicago community while his work Of Love — a collection of compositions to cherish life, time and lifetimes — serves as a personal requiem. This program features two world premieres — an additional work by Stewart and a new work by CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery.

Genre-defying bassist and composer Edgar Meyer bridges the worlds of classical and bluegrass music to shine a new light on American music. The only bassist to ever be awarded a MacArthur ‘genius’ grant, his diverse lineup of musical collaborators includes Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile, and Béla Fleck. Meyer joins the Winston-Salem Symphony to perform his own Concerto for Double Bass and Giovanni Bottesini’s Concerto No. 2.

Jessie Montgomery’s Strum likewise salutes American folk music, creating a mesmerizing groove through the plucking of strings, and Dvořák’s groundbreaking Symphony No. 9 masterfully fuses European classical traditions with the rich rhythms and melodies of the American landscape.

ROCO Co-Principal Cellist Alexis Pia Gerlach leads her first Unchambered Series concert on March 2 at MATCH! This electric evening highlighting the textures of the cello will feature the Texas premiere of Kevin Puts‘ Arcana, originally written for and premiered by Alexis, along with works by Jessie Montgomery, Johannes Brahms, and J.S. Bach. This performance will also be livestreamed free on ROCO.org, Facebook, YouTube, and A440.live.

This remarkable ensemble, serving as the 2022-23 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence, will present their final concert in this residency, a performance that was eagerly anticipated and has been postponed from June 2023. The concert will take place in the intimate setting of the Chamber Music Room, offering a perfect acoustic environment to appreciate the quartet's artistry.

The Ivalas Quartet is renowned for their commitment to showcasing diverse voices in classical music, and this concert is no exception. Their program features works by Black and indigenous composers, including a world premiere by the exceptionally talented Derrick Skye, whose compositions reflect his Ghanaian, Nigerian, Native American, and British/Irish heritage. Skye's new work, "Deliverance," promises to be a transcultural exploration blending Persian classical melodic systems with rhythmic elements from West and North African music, offering a unique and enriching musical experience.

The quartet, composed of Reuben Kebede and Tiani Butts on violins, Marcus Stevenson on viola, and Pedro Sánchez on cello, will also perform pieces by Jessie Montgomery, Carlos Simon, and Eleanor Alberga, creating a program that celebrates the richness and diversity of classical music. Each piece has been carefully selected to align with the Ivalas Quartet's mission to disrupt and enhance the classical music world by amplifying voices less known and sometimes unheard.

This concert is not just a performance but a statement of the Ivalas Quartet's dedication to representation, diversity, and the power of music to unite and inspire. The Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra's first winter-quarter performance opens with the beloved Guillaume Tell (William Tell) Overture, its rousing finale now a staple of television and film soundtracks. Continuing the program is Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major, written for the composer's friend Mstislav Rostropovich, who committed the notoriously difficult work to memory in just four days. Jessie Montgomery's solemn, yet hopeful 2021 Hymn for Everyone provides a reflection on the collective challenges we have faced in light of a global pandemic and political upheaval. Concluding the concert is Maurice Ravel's lush and colorful Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2; originally composed for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, it depicts a pastoral courtship scene between the two title characters.

Fast-rising star conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya leads a program exploring different shades of the human experience, beginning with Jessie Montgomery’s Hymn for Everyone, a meditation on life during the pandemic. 2023 Shepherd School of Music Concerto Competition Winner Maximus Gurath shines in Elgar’s profoundly expressive Cello Concerto, a poignant response to World War I. For Shostakovich, his Fifth Symphony was literally a matter of life and death—already on thin ice with a Soviet regime that regularly “purged” unsuitable artists, a negative review would have been disastrous, and likely fatal. The monumental masterpiece he created achieved the impossible: appeasing authorities, scattering covert moments of defiance, and immortalizing music’s power to speak volumes without a single word.
