On Mother’s Day, harpist Megan Conley brings her Ocean Music Action project to GatherNYC in a concert paired with a volunteer day of climate action. OMA uses the transformative power of music to inspire greater stewardship of oceans and waterways, and the musical selections are inspired by the natural world. Megan, formerly the principal harpist of the Houston Symphony now living in Honolulu, will be joined by several of her esteemed colleagues from The Knights for a special program honoring mother earth.

Camerata Pacifica’s 2023-24 season wraps with a world premiere by Grammy-nominated Brazilian-American composer Clarice Assad, commissioned for accordion, clarinet, cello, and percussion and written for and featuring Julien Labro, one of the world’s foremost accordion players in both jazz and classical genres. Additionally, Camerata Pacifica presents Principal Oboe Nicholas Daniel, whose playing “bursts with exuberant charisma and optimistic allure” (MusicalCriticism.com) on the U.S. premiere of British composer Martin Butler’s scintillating Remember This Fire for oboe and percussion, which was inspired by Ezra Pound’s poem The Alchemist. The season finale also includes New Zealand-Greek composer John Psathas’ One Study, a virtuosic work for marimba, with junk percussion and digital audio, and Listen, Quiet for cello and electronics by Paola Prestini, named one of the Top 35 Female Composers in Classical Music (Washington Post) and known for her “otherwordly…outright gorgeous music” (The New York Times). Other featured artists are Principal Cello Ani Aznavoorian; Principal Clarinet Jose Franch-Ballester; and Principal Percussion Ji Hye Jung. The program includes projections by noted video artist S Katy Tucker.

The San Francisco Girls Chorus’ (SFGC) Premier Ensemble presents its season finale concert with a program of all new music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. The concert features a collaboration with renowned percussionist and composer Haruka Fujii, one of the most prominent solo percussionists and marimbists of her generation, including a commissioned work by Fujii. In this program, SFGC and Fujii reunite after their previous collaboration on the world premiere of the choral opera Tomorrow’s Memories: A Little Manila Diary by Matthew Welch. Fujii has won international acclaim for her interpretations of contemporary music, having performed numerous premieres of works from luminary composers, and appeared as a soloist with orchestras including the San Francisco Symphony, Munich Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and more. Since 2010, she has performed as an artist of the Grammy Award-winning Silkroad Ensemble, joining a group of international musicians founded by Yo-Yo Ma, and serves as one of the artistic leadership team alongside Artistic Director Rhiannon Giddens. Described as a chorus “capable of handling any vocal challenge set before them” (Gramophone), SFGC’s Premier Ensemble is a GRAMMY Award-winning chorus with a focus on empowering young women through music.

Los Angeles County Orchestra (LACO)’s 2023/24 Season wraps with Jaime Martín conducting the word premiere of a LACO Sound Investment commission by Nina Shekhar, noted for bold and deeply personal work that “surprises and delights aplenty” (Los Angeles Times). Sound Investment is a groundbreaking program LACO established in 2001 that engages audience members in developing new classical works. Renowned Venezuelan-born pianist Gabriela Montero, who captivates with her visionary interpretations, takes the stage for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor. Schubert’s last major work, Symphony No. 9 (“The Great C major”), caps the season finale.

GatherNYC’s 2023-24 season concludes with a celebratory program curated and performed by one of New York City’s most accomplished violinists, Kristin Lee. Kristin enjoys a vibrant and multi-faceted career as a soloist with major orchestras like the Philadelphia Orchestra and St. Louis Symphony, a chamber musician on the roster of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, an Assistant Professor of Violin at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and Founder and Artistic Director of Emerald City Music, a chamber music series in Washington State. Kristin and her colleagues will share a virtuosic and exciting program to finish the season.
