Composer/performer Jessie Montgomery is the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Mead Composer-in-Residence and was recently named Musical America‘s 2023 Composer of the Year. TCP is thrilled to collaborate with Jessie in a dynamic program that equally showcases her excellence as visionary creator and virtuosic performer. Her first-ever work for percussion quartet draws a universe of sounds and characters out of a very compact percussion setup, and is paired with Lou Harrison’s Concerto for Violin with Percussion Orchestra–a tour de force that draws inspiration from the vibrant sounds of Javanese gamelan.

This program came about through deep familial relationships and friendships that have yielded profoundly personal and compelling music. Gabriel Kahane's Heirloom, a new piano concerto written for his father, the renowned pianist Jeffrey Kahane, channels numerous themes of cross-generational and cross-cultural musical inspiration; from a paternal grandmother escaping the Holocaust in 1938 ("My Grandmother Knew Alban Berg”), to the tension between classical and popular music forms ("Guitars in the Attic"), to the wonder of seeing the world through the eyes of his young daughter ("Vera's Chicken-Powered Transit Machine").

Rising conductor Kenneth Bean joins the CSO for this engaging program. Cellist Thomas Mesa performs two works: a new cello concerto by Jessie Montgomery, current composer-in-Residence at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, one of the most beloved works in the cello repertoire. Bookending the program are Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides, inspired by the composer’s travel to Scotland, and Beethoven’s engaging second symphony.

Conductor Manfred Honeck leads the CSO in two captivating works. Principal Percussion Cynthia Yeh takes the spotlight in the premiere of a new concerto by Jessie Montgomery, the CSO’s Mead Composer-in-Residence. Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony awes with its breadth, drama and rapturous intensity. This enthralling score includes a radiant tribute to Bruckner’s idol, Richard Wagner, and a boisterous Austrian country dance.

Experience the famous versatility of The Met Orchestra as Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Brahms’s First Symphony, two of Mozart’s great arias, and a recent work by one of today’s most celebrated composers. Jessie Montgomery’s unifying “Hymn for Everyone” came to her as a revelation—a rare sensation for the composer—and was premiered by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2022. The agile voice of world-renowned soprano Lisette Oropesa shines in significant concert arias by Mozart. Grand in its scope as well as its themes, Brahms’s First Symphony is a heroic work, the culmination of decades of preparation and years of labor by a master.

Immerse yourself in the enchanting melodies of the "Water Music" concert series, presented by The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia for their 23/24 season. Under the baton of Music Director Dirk Brossé, this series promises an unforgettable auditory journey through Handel's Water Music Suite No.3 in G major, HWV 350, Williams' Sinfony, Telemann's Water Music, Overture, and Montgomery's I Want To Go Home featuring the talented soprano Michelle Johnson.

The events are scheduled for Thursday, June 13, 2024, and Saturday, June 15, 2024, both starting at 7:00 pm. In Records from a Vanishing City, Jessie Montgomery pines for the gritty, multicultural Manhattan of her youth, spent in her father’s Lower East Side rehearsal studio for rock and jazz bands.

Music and the struggle for freedom go hand in hand. Here, Carlos Kalmar pairs overtures written for Beethoven's French Revolution-era drama Fidelio with two works championing freedom and social justice in our own country: Jessie Montgomery's Five Freedom Songs, based on the historical anthology Slave Songs of the United States, and Chicago-composer Margaret Bonds's Montgomery Variations, dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

As the TSO’s Artist in Residence, Cuban-American cellist Tommy Mesa will perform TWO concertos, juxtaposing classic Haydn with the recent Divided by Jessie Montgomery. The composer describes Divided as a response to the social and political unrest of the recent past, the sense of helplessness people feel in a world that seems in constant crisis. By contrast, Brahms’ sunny second symphony closes the program, composed in the summer of 1877 surrounded by the beauty and quiet of the Austrian countryside.

French favorites meet new wonders, led by guest conductor Sunny Xia! While all three French works were written within a decade in the late 19th century, only two⁠—Debussy’s Petite Suite and Fauré’s Pélleas et Mélisande⁠—entered the repertoire. It took more than another century for the music of Augusta Holmès to be discovered, including the lush La nuit et l’amour, an interlude from her larger work inspired by the work of French painter Puvis de Chavannes. Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst, commissioned by the Sphinx Organization for its Virtuosi, sparkles like the formation of the astronomical phenomenon itself.

Seven deadly sins

This time, we welcome alumni of the Festival String Fellowship to play a variety of works for string orchestra, including the popular Dvořák Serenade for Strings and Bartók's zesty Romanianian Folk Dances. Fellowship alum Kyle Dickson, who's gone on to conduct orchestras across the United States, leads the ensemble in this happy reunion. In addition, this concert features several vocal soloists from the Festival's Vocal Fellowship program.
