As a woman in the 19th century, the French composer Mélanie Hélène Bonis was only able to compose and publish pieces under the gender-neutral pseudonym "Mel Bonis". Having received little musical encouragement as a child and later being prevented from continuing her education by marriage and family obligations, Bonis repeatedly turned to composing on her own and published over 300 works.
