Even in his youth, the narrow-chested, bespectacled high school student Eugen Berthold Friedrich Brecht loved the ballad singers, eccentric clowns, fairground pimps, and shooting gallery showmen who sold the people inexpensive but by no means cheap entertainment. At the Plärrer - the Augsburg bird shooting - he appeared with a clique of like-minded people, plucked an out-of-tune guitar and sang ballads he had set to music himself in a croaking voice. His idols could not have been more different: the pathetic Schiller on his right, and on his left, Bavaria's great comedian Karl Valentin. "My love of clarity comes from my unclear way of thinking," he remarked coquettishly, although Brecht found his topic earlier than many of his contemporaries: social misery. What makes people human, why are they enslaved, and why do they treat their fellow human beings so shabbily? In his dramas he made heroes of characters who rebelled, often failed in their tasks, but remained steadfast: Schweyk, Puntila, Courage, Galileo, Johanna. Despite all his justified anger at injustice and oppression, he never lost sight of the beauty of life. After all, what do people live for? For the extras. Seven clowns and a handful of musicians throw their hats into the ring of the Circus Mundi and make Brecht's songs and poems, his life and the intolerable conditions dance.
