Originally Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 was supposed to be dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte. When the latter crowned himself Emperor of France, Beethoven was so dismayed that he scratched out Napoleon’s name on the title page so fiercely that it left a hole in the paper.
