The Ghent-born playwright Maurice Maeterlinck is the only Belgian to have won the Nobel Prize for Literature to date. His work has inspired many composers: Debussy, Schönberg and Sibelius, among others, have all set his symbolist play Pelléas et Mélisande to music.
