“Nixon in China” was the first opera in the spirit of minimal music in 1987. Its composer John Adams, however, prefers to call himself a “maximalist” because he combines “minimalist” stylistic devices with many other things. He also used elements from his opera for the orchestral foxtrot “The Chairman Dances”.
