Ludwig van Beethoven received a commission from the Vienna Court Theatre to compose incidental music for Goethe's tragedy "Egmont" in the autumn of 1809. This not only brought him the urgently needed fee: Beethoven was able to use this music to set his experiences in French-occupied Austria to music.
