For a long time, Russian musical life was in a kind of deep sleep. It was not until the 1860s that Russian music began to revive, when missing musical institutions were founded and a public interested in music emerged. The path of Peter Tchaikovsky is exemplary; he would hardly have become a composer if he had not been able to attend the newly founded conservatory in St. Petersburg as one of the first students.
