Be transformed by the heartbreaking serenity of Gustav Mahler’s Ninth Symphony. Led by Grammy Award-winning conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, this transcendent farewell—hailed as “the greatest Mahler ever composed” by Viennese composer Alban Berg—showcases Mahler at the height of his skill, pushing symphonic form to its limits. From its poignant opening motives to final tender notes that slowly dissipate into silence, follow a journey that celebrates the splendor of life—and the peaceful recognition of its inevitable end. Lyrical, searching, and deeply human, this monumental work unfolds with extraordinary emotional depth and color.

Curtis Opera Theatre opens its 2026–27 series with Susannah, Carlisle Floyd’s poignant tragedy that helped define American opera. Written at the height of 1950s McCarthyism, the opera draws inspiration from the biblical story of Susanna and the Elders, reimagining the tale in rural Tennessee. The work follows a young woman unjustly persecuted by her Evangelical community after a false accusation, unfolding into a raw and deeply human drama.

Romance and madness collide in Haydn’s heroic comedy Orlando Paladino. Inspired by Ludovico Ariosto’s 16th-century epic poem, the opera follows princess Angelica and her beloved Medoro as they flee the jealous knight Orlando—a character based on Frankish military hero Roland—whose unrequited love drives him toward delirious obsession. The fantastical plot unfolds with a powerful sorceress, a descent into the underworld, and a resolution that affirms the power of true love.

Immerse yourself in the propulsive, electrifying sound of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4—an uncompromising masterpiece silenced by Soviet authorities for decades. Inspired by Gustav Mahler, this three-movement work builds its musical themes to a monumental scale with an exhilarating and ferocious energy. It reveals Shostakovich at his most daring and radical, shifting abruptly between explosive orchestral passages, sardonic marches, and eerie, subdued textures. Led by Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä, this unsettling work creates a dark—and at times surreal—sound world that ultimately dissolves into a haunting close.

Curtis Opera Theatre presents Debussy‘s modernist masterpiece Pelléas et Mélisande, an ethereal meditation on love, jealousy, and the inevitability of fate. Adapted from Belgian playwright and librettist Maurice Maeterlinck’s drama, this enigmatic opera traces a shadowy, dream-like love triangle among Mélisande, Pelléas, and his envious brother Golaud. Set in a world of half-light and suggestion, the drama unfolds through glances, silences, and hidden desires.
