Gorgeous melodies, richly satisfying musical textures, and a solo part that leaves you open-mouthed with wonder – Brahms’ Violin Concerto stops you in your tracks and it’s no wonder that it’s been an audience favourite pretty much since its premiere. A selection of music with a strongly central-European character starts the night; punchy, bold, and at times, sweetly romantic.

Two contrasted moods in tonight’s concert. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 10 (for two pianos) is full of the energy of youth – graceful but with drive and verve. No. 27 came later in life. Warm, uncomplicated and mellow, it’s uncharacteristically straight to the point for Mozart, with just the slightest hint of weary resignation.
