Listeners have described Gabriela Montero’s piano playing as wonderfully imaginative with a monster technique. Montero takes on Prokofiev’s emotionally turbulent Third Piano Concerto in her SLSO debut. Ryan Bancroft also makes his SLSO debut leading the orchestra in Aaron Copland’s soaring Third Symphony—plus an imaginative work that gazes skyward by contemporary American composer and environmentalist Gabriella Smith.

Our extraordinary year culminates with the lush soundscapes of Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloé, collaborations with the IN UNISON and St. Louis Symphony Choruses, and music by two of the SLSO’s dearest friends. As nearly 300 musicians fill the stage and captivated audiences fill Powell Hall, we celebrate the transformative power of music and community.

Isata Kanneh-Mason, whose playing has been called “calmly commanding” and “unfailingly subtle” by The New York Times, makes her SLSO debut in a recital with music inspired by nighttime and daybreak. From the timeless opening notes of Beethoven’s “Moonlight” sonata to Dobrinka Tabakova’s starlight-hued Nocturne and Ravel’s haunting Gaspard de la Nuit (Gaspard of the Night), in the hands of Kanneh-Mason, the piano travels from sparkling to moody and contemplative.

Giraffes can’t dance…yet. Learn and grow with Gerald the Giraffe as he overcomes challenges, discovers his talents, and finds music that inspires him to dance. The SLSO brings Gerald’s heartwarming journey to life with a playful performance where kids are invited to make music and find their own beat. Based on the book Giraffes Can’t Dance, written by Giles Andreae and illustrated by Guy Parker-Rees, this interactive performance is perfect for little listeners with big imaginations.
