Born in Guadeloupe, Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, was not only an outstanding violin virtuoso and composer in late 18th century Paris. He also excelled as a successful fencer and was Marie-Antoinette's favorite musician. As a composer of operas, symphonies, concertos and string quartets, he celebrated successes that Mozart was denied in France during his lifetime.
