More details
Verdi wrote the opera La Traviata in 1853, based on Alexandre Dumas' novel The Lady of the Camellias about the courtesan Marie Duplessis. The novel, as well as Verdi's opera, has since been the basis for many interpretations, such as the films Pretty Woman and Moulin Rouge , as well as a long series of ballets, novels and plays. The woman's decline and her apparent lack of moral compass have always fascinated.
