Dance It Forward captures the elegant fusion between ballet and music throughout the concert. Come and enjoy a fantastic show with lively dancers performing on stage, and our amazing orchestra playing in the pit. Strauss’ Emperor Waltz begins our evening with a playful march melding into a vibrant Viennese waltz. Featured as the pianist on his work, Jerod Tate’s Winter Moons creates a ballet centered around American Indian legends paired with a narrator. Lastly, Copland’s ballet, Appalachian Spring, embraces 1930’s optimistic American culture.

The concert begins with Strauss’ Roses from the South and Beethoven’s lighthearted Overture to Fidelio. From a menacing beginning to an electrifying finish, Georges Bizet memorable Carmen Suites tells the fated story of a lovestruck soldier and passionate Carmen in two suites. York Symphony’s Concertmaster Denise Dillenbeck shines in Nancy Ives’ Immortal Beloved. Ives arranged the piece to celebrate Beethoven’s unknown muse and showcases these women’s voices.

Carmen Meets Beethoven

Based on the timeless, imaginative novel, Richard Strauss’ Don Quixote conjures the knight’s story with otherworldly tones and artistic narrative. Philadelphia Orchestra’s cellist Yumi Kendall “plays” the main character of the heroic Don Quixote’s fantastical adventures. Johann Strauss, Jr. praises Spain’s treasured musical traditions in Spanish March. Manuel de Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat features a comedy of errors with frenzied and euphoric tones.

Women Rock

The York Symphony Orchestra and Chorus concludes the season with Carl Orff’s Carmina burana. Inspired by medieval poems and codex, Carmina burana combines bold percussion with recurring vocals and vivacious harmonies. Strauss’ Wine, Women and Song captures a Viennese Waltz structure with sassy arrangements and fanfare.
