“My pains, Mother, are not pains of hunger.” After the death of her husband Antonio, Bernarda Alba mourns in a shuttered home while keeping watch over five daughters—each desperate to break free from her matriarchal stranglehold. A tale of lust, longing and lamentation, Federico García Lorca’s classic Spanish drama is brought to a dark and melodic boil in this musical adaptation from composer Michael John LaChiusa.
