The Setnor School of Music at Syracuse University welcomes the Oswego High School Chorus (Robert Dumas, director), the Oswego Middle School Chorus (Paul Brewster, director), and the West Genesee High School Chorus (Tony Alvaro, director) for an evening of collaborative music-making in the beautiful setting of Hendricks Chapel. Each guest choir will perform a short set and receive feedback from Syracuse faculty conductors in this informal event. The program will also feature performances by Syracuse University Singers and the Hendricks Chapel Choir, including “The Cloths of Heaven,” a new work for choir and organ by Natalie Draper, assistant professor of theory and composition at the Setnor School of Music. Families and friends are most welcome to attend this informal music event.

The Malmgren Concert Series of Hendricks Chapel invites you to a profoundly moving concert on Sunday, October 20th at 4 PM, marking the beginning of Remembrance Week (October 20-26). The event features the world premiere of “Each Moment Radiant,” a newly commissioned chamber work by composer Kurt Erickson and poet Brian Turner commemorating the Pan Am Flight 103 Air Disaster. Setnor School of Music faculty and guest musicians will perform Erickson and Turner’s song cycle “Here, Bullet” and Johannes Brahms’s piano trio in C minor.

The Malmgren Concert Series of Hendricks Chapel invites you to “Lamentation and Joy” on Thursday, October 10 at 8 PM. Esteemed guest conductor Marques L. A. Garrett will lead the combined choirs of the Setnor School of Music and the Syracuse University Oratorio Society in an evening of powerful choral works. The program features “The Cry of Jeremiah” by renowned composer Rosephanye Powell, a stirring multi-movement oratorio for choir and organ based on the text from the 29th chapter of Jeremiah. Additionally, the Hendricks Chapel Choir will give the world premiere of Natalie Draper’s “The Cloths of Heaven,” the Concert Choir will perform Nathaniel Dett’s “Let Us Cheer the Weary Traveler,” and the combined choirs will close the evening with Garrett’s own compositions, “A Song of Life” and “Your Hand and Mine.” Marques L. A. Garrett, an associate professor of choral studies at the University of North Texas, is celebrated for his work as a conductor, composer, and researcher.

Orange Juice is the Setnor School of Music’s premiere advanced jazz combo featuring instrumental and vocal performers. The ensemble performs regularly in concerts on campus as well as university and community events. The group consists of vocalist Ania Kapllani, Sawyer Kidd-Myers on saxophone, Xaden Nishimitsu on trumpet, keyboardist Kai Wong, Owen Wernow on guitar, Luke Brady on bass, and Grady Collingbourne on drums.

Theodicy Jazz Collective returns to Hendricks Chapel to present the world premiere of their new “Jazz Freedom Suite” in collaboration with the Hendricks Chapel Choir. Supported by a prestigious grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Theodicy’s suite incorporates sounds from the traditions of jazz and gospel music and rhythms from Latin America and Africa. The group’s residency at Syracuse University includes making a studio recording of the new work with the Hendricks Chapel Choir.
