In 1853, Verdi wrote the opera La Traviata based on Alexandre Dumas' novel The Lady of the Camellias about the courtesan Marie Duplessis. The novel, as well as Verdi's opera, has since been the basis for many interpretations, such as the films Pretty Woman and Moulin Rouge , as well as a wide range of ballets, novels and plays.
