A proud "Allegro marziale" in Carl Nielsen's opera "Saul and David" sets the tone for David's heroic triumph over Goliath in the second act. Jean Sibelius strikes heroic and pastoral tones in his Symphony No. 2, which one can tell was composed in light-filled Italy – as does Nielsen's overture, incidentally.
