Goethe's 1789 play "Egmont" requires several musical interludes. In 1810, when the play was once again highly topical due to the War of Liberation against Napoleon, the Vienna Hofburg Theater commissioned Ludwig van Beethoven to compose new incidental music for "Egmont."
