When the door to courtroom 700 of the Berlin Moabit jury court opened on November 12, 1992, an old man stepped into the dock. His name was Erich Honecker – former Chairman of the State Council of the GDR. The charge was manslaughter. But Honecker had cancer. The case was dropped. A verdict was never reached. There were no verbatim transcripts of the trial. All that remained were absurd anecdotes and a 12- page statement by the defendant in court....
