Based on Carlo Goldoni's masterpiece, the plot features a protagonist who is miserly, imperious, irritating to his servants, oppressive to his son and granddaughter, and dislikes and resentful towards the world. From the opera's opening lines, it would seem impossible to empathize with such a character, but in the play, the female universe prevails.
