The folk songs that Franz Liszt heard during his childhood in Raiding, then part of Hungary, remained with him throughout his life. They also provided the melodic material for the Hungarian Melodies and the "Magyar Rhapsodiak" for piano, which he composed during a brief return to Pest in the winter of 1839/40.
