French virtuoso Alexandre Kantorow sets his sights on a triptych of formidable sonatas by Scriabin, Medtner, and Beethoven, whose final sonata is infused with powerful drama, playful jesting, and daring innovation, even foreshadowing the toe-tapping rhythms of jazz and boogie-woogie. The pianist also performs Liszt’s soulful take on a beloved Bach cantata and a searching, wistful prelude by Chopin.
