Schubert wrote nine symphonies but never heard them performed. His great C major symphony was first performed in Leipzig in 1839 by Mendelssohn, after Schumann found the score in Vienna. At the time it was considered difficult to play, but today we enjoy its beauty. Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto was written almost 30 years earlier and premiered by himself in 1803.
