The American composer Amy Beach (1867–1944) was widely recognised during her lifetime, but like so many other women composers, she was not given the same opportunities as her male colleagues. Fortunately, her music is now enjoying a well-deserved revival. One example is her exquisite Romance, which was such a success at its premiere – performed by Beach herself together with violinist Maud Powell – that the audience demanded an immediate encore.
