When Belle & Sebastian's debut 'Tigermilk' was released in 1996, it was in many ways a violation of the zeitgeist. Britpop's loud self-confidence dominated and Oasis and Blur were fighting for the headlines. In the midst of this noise came a quiet little album from Glasgow, pressed in a thousand copies. 'Tigermilk' was low-key, literary, friendly and everyday poetic and perhaps that's why it felt like a minor revelation. Just a few months (!) later, 'If You're Feeling Sinister' followed, an album that not only confirmed Belle & Sebastian's talent, but also showed that the band constituted a new voice in pop history. Where other groups sought arenas, Belle & Sebastian sought intimacy. Their music was as inspired by 60s chamber pop, Orange Juice and The Smiths as it was by the rain-soaked streets of Glasgow, and it carried a belief that the greatest emotions often reside in the smallest details.
