Human or monster? In Mary Shelley's 1818 novel, the young scientist Victor Frankenstein pursues an ambitious goal: he assembles a human being from various body parts and attempts to bring it to life. The result of his experiment, however, is decidedly ambivalent. When he finally comes face to face with his "creation," he is overcome with horror and flees from his own creation. Is it a demonic monster, born of hubris and obsessive scientific curiosity? Or is this being, brought into the world without its own intervention, also a vulnerable creature, yearning for love, affection, and friendship?

Safa and Aisha are best friends. The two Pakistani-British women from London's East End have known each other for what feels like forever. But now, at 21, they are about to enter the workforce, and their paths diverge for the first time: While Aisha starts as a teaching assistant at her old school and becomes increasingly interested in her roots, Safa begins working as a marketing assistant at a trendy advertising agency and adapts more and more to her new upper-class colleagues in terms of language, clothing, and behavior. After a terrorist attack, both women suddenly find themselves under suspicion because of their Muslim heritage. The question of assimilating into mainstream society or remaining true to their own roots becomes increasingly pressing – and their friendship is put to a severe test.

Friends Bérenger and Jean are chatting on a café terrace one Sunday afternoon when suddenly a rhinoceros charges across the square. While everyone present discusses the incident in astonishment and horror, only Bérenger remains unmoved. The next day at the office, the event is hotly debated – until Madame Boeuf bursts in, delivers her husband's sick note, and breathlessly reports that a rhinoceros followed her. Soon after, it rushes up the stairs and is identified by Madame Boeuf as her husband. Gradually, more and more inhabitants of the provincial town transform into angry pachyderms. And suddenly, they are in the majority. Anyone who wants to belong also transforms – "one has to move with the times, after all."

Jennifer is home alone. Her mother suddenly has to work a night shift at the hospital, and her father no longer lives with them. Jennifer is actually a little afraid of being alone, but it's also a great opportunity to do all the things Mom usually forbids: lying on the sofa with her shoes on, ordering pizza without permission, and watching TV until she drops. But even that gets boring eventually, and Jennifer becomes increasingly anxious. The best thing to do is hide in the closet. But what's this? Someone's already in there: Fearman, a terrified superhero from a distant galaxy. He's on the run from the nasty Rabbleman, who, of course, happens to ring the doorbell at this very moment. Chaos ensues.

A fisherman and his wife live in a miserable hut. One day, the fisherman catches an enchanted, talking flounder, which he immediately releases. At home, his wife reproaches him, demanding that he ask the flounder for some prosperity. Reluctantly, for the sake of peace, he visits the flounder again and wishes for a proper farm for his wife.

One family, two languages, one hundred years, and more than two thousand kilometers between Istanbul and Gelsenkirchen. Akin Emanuel Şipal tells the story of a family in which the Silesian great-grandmother once attacked the Turkish grandfather with an umbrella. The son-in-law returns to Turkey as an author and translates the great works of German literature. The next generation is torn between the two countries. Added to this is much of what Turks think they know about Germans and Germans about Turks. The author's alter ego gets entangled in all of this. "Mother Father Country" paints a fast-paced and subtly humorous picture of a world where cultures blend and become something new. In 2022, "Mother Father Country" was awarded the Audience Prize at the prestigious Mülheim Theatre Festival
