Benjamin Barker returns to London after years of exile – with a new name and sinister intentions. As Sweeney Todd, he opens a barbershop above Mrs. Lovett's bakery on Fleet Street. He wants revenge on Judge Turpin, who once unjustly deported him to Australia in order to steal his wife and daughter. Todd's razor is meant to send Turpin to his doom. The macabre business model he devises with Mrs. Lovett suits him perfectly: a fresh shave is half the battle. The customers who take a seat in Todd's barber's chair end up one floor below – in Mrs. Lovett's meat pies, which soon become incredibly popular. The curtain rises, come what may. And hopefully, no one notices that quite a few things are going wrong in this comedy – and not just for the couple in the play. They've accidentally invited not only their good friend and her new partner to the dinner party, but also her ex-husband. Under no circumstances can the two of them meet. In a series of ludicrous actions, the couple tries to cover up the mishap and prevent disaster as best they can. But there's even more turmoil behind the scenes! Right at the beginning of the play, one of the actors simply can't remember his lines. He thought just moments ago that he was there to do some voice-over work...

The most intense and insightful days and nights were those when Sugar made the Florida Bar his home. Sugar's glorious irrationality and razor-sharp intellect had always been a source of hope and joy for us, enabling us not only to endure the present but also to savor it. "And it's about love," Sugar would often say. "How am I supposed to understand you without love? How can I listen to you if there's no love? That's just a job. But I want to love you! I want to take away your fear of the future and make the present the best time of your life!" That was Sugar. But now Sugar had left without saying goodbye, and here we sat in the Florida Bar, wondering what would happen next. Was there still enough love left? Within us? And enough recklessness, intelligence, and anarchy? And why is the Florida Bar the only place of exuberance and dialectical thinking in this town? "Well," Sugar would have said, "Nobody's perfect. Not this town, not this country, and certainly not the lover. The lover doesn't want a long life, he wants the great feeling." And I think Sugar is right, because whatever the question is, the answer can only be: I will love you. Following the successful premiere of the Western Chico Zitrone in the Valley of Hope, the renowned actor and director Milan Peschel, together with the Schwerin acting ensemble, has developed a new theatrical evening brimming with love.

“O horrible confusions of life, we hang here by the red thread!” – so begins the anthem of the Gallows Brothers by Christian Morgenstern (1871-1914).

And isn't it sometimes helpful to see things with a bit of gallows humor?
Morgenstern himself wrote that "gallows poetry" was a kind of worldview, and that one sees the world differently from the perspective of the gallows. With his gallows songs, he wanted to "spread a little intellectual lightness, cheerfulness, and freedom, to enliven the imagination, to thaw just a little of the music of the soul frozen in the post horn." Fifty years later, Marcel Reich-Ranicki recommended all the gallows songs in his canon of German-language poetry.

Poems like "The Picket Fence," "Sophie, the Hangman's Maid," and "The Moon Sheep" are legendary; "The Werewolf" is even part of the school curriculum. "You laugh yourself silly," Tucholsky already remarked, "and afterwards, having grown more serious, admire a profound lyricism that only veers into the playful at the last moment—and realize in the end that you've learned a philosophical sentence."
