John developed his signature ‘actor-musician’ style whilst at our small but mighty theatre – with his notable 2004 production of Sweeney Todd, later transferring to Broadway (and earning Doyle a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical). This success was followed by a similar actor-musician transfer of Sondheim’s Company, in 2006, which won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. Doyle’s tenure at the Watermill (which ended with his final production, Merrily We Roll Along, in 2008) redefined the Watermill’s identity.
