Get under the skin of Mozart’s last symphony, as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra retells the story of a masterwork.

In 1788, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed his last symphony.

We’re still not quite sure how he did it: creating a masterpiece so perfect that for more than two centuries, it has shared a name with the king of the gods. But why is it considered to be a masterpiece? Here to answer that question (and more) are presenter Leah Broad, Vasily Petrenko (conducting the RPO for the first time at Cadogan Hall) and the full Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with an entertaining guide to what makes Mozart tick. They’ll take the Symphony apart and show you how it works. And then they’ll put it back together, concluding the evening with a full performance.

Whether you’re a hardcore Mozart fan or a total newbie, it’s an experience that never fails to inspire.

The Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra continue its season at Cadogan Hall with conductor James Blair and award-winning soprano Lorna McLean in an all-Wagner programme, exploring some of the most powerful moments from the composer’s operatic masterpieces.

The concert begins with the Overture to Tannhäuser, where noble chorales and surging drama set the tone for the evening. This is followed by the Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, music of extraordinary intensity and longing that remains among Wagner’s most profound creations.

One of today’s most inspirational pianists joins this elite German radio orchestra for a concert that exudes wit, melodic beauty and mercurial charm.

“The melodies fly so thick here that you have to be careful not to step on one,” deadpanned Brahms to his publisher when writing his joyful, sunny symphony. It could well apply to this whole concert. It is Brahms at his most joyful and easy-going, and Prokofiev channelling the spirit of Haydn for an affectionate, livewire pastiche – soulful, tuneful and occasionally laugh-out-loud.

Some friendships resonate even before meeting.

A piano that asks, a trombone that answers, two voices that play at recognising each other. Music carries the trace of time, holding the memory of years and transforming this friendship into art. An intimate and unadorned project, yet powerful in its shared essence, drawing from jazz, roots music, and Latin American influences to create a unique sonic territory – a place to stay.

Some friendships have no clear beginning or end, only the certainty of existing. From this comes the joint album by Rita Payés and Lucía Fumero: an intimate, simple work, woven with care and emotion. The music draws from the freedom of jazz and roots that intertwine with Latin American echoes, shaped by a rich musical background that stands firmly on stage.

The London premiere of a cinematic masterpiece transformed! Grammy-nominated composer Michael Shapiro‘s thrilling score turns a horror classic into a contemporary cinematic event.

One of the earliest sound films, James Whale’s legendary 1931 movie Frankenstein, starring Boris Karloff, had dialogue but no music. Shapiro’s critically acclaimed score marries the original film with live orchestra, creating a haunting emotional landscape and significantly enhancing the film’s dramatic power.

Folksongs, fantasies and glorious Tchaikovsky from Kirill Karabits and violinist Liya Petrova.

Genius enjoys a challenge. Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto begins with a chord that was supposed to be impossible, though with a violinist as brilliant as RPO Artist-in-Residence Liya Petrova (“exquisite”, The Guardian), the impossible comes as standard.

It’s the elegant jewel at the centre of a concert filled with melodies close to the heart of Ukrainian guest conductor Kirill Karabits. Some are unfamiliar – like the glowing colours and lush harmonies of Angel, a rarely-heard (well, in Britain anyway) masterwork by the Ukrainian composer Fyodor Akimenko.
