Mendelssohn, Tan Dun, and Joel Thompson

Mendelssohn was so taken with the history and landscape of Scotland that it inspired his Symphony No. 3, which is inflected with stylistic elements of Scottish dances. The program opens with a World Premiere by Joel Thompson, followed by NY Phil Principal Trombone Joseph Alessi as soloist in Tan Dun’s concerto inspired by three ancient Chinese instruments.
